A Baby Goes West gender reveal and other favorite things

Hi, sweet friends! How are you? I hope your week has been going along nicely! We’ve had a great week over here and a busy one at that. Today, I’m sharing a few favorite things, but more importantly, I’m telling you whether we’re having a boy or a girl. Ready for it?

Boy or girl? A Baby Goes West is a …

Earlier in the week, Dave and I went to get a special 3D ultrasound during my 15th week to find out the gender of the Baby Goes West as soon as we could (most people find out at around 20 weeks). We asked the ultrasound tech to put the gender in a little envelope, rather than telling us on the spot, and then we dropped the card off at Sweet Affair Bakery in Walnut Creek. I had arranged with the bakery ahead of time to make a tiny cake just how we wanted it (red velvet with cream cheese frosting, of course), so they were able to finish it up with either pink or blue frosting on the inside while we walked around the shopping plaza. Then, we went back and picked up our adorable cake.

We went home immediately and cut into the cake! Dave videoed the whole thing, so we could send it to my family and his family shortly thereafter to give them the big reveal. While I told Dave and others that I would be totally happy with either a boy or a girl, I knew that Dave was really hoping for a boy. And he got what he wanted … when I cut into that beauty, it was blue, blue, blue. And we both screamed:

OMG!! It’s a boy!!

Yay! It’s so funny, but I feel like finding out the gender of our baby was nearly as exciting as when I found out I was pregnant. Now, the bump (and it’s starting to be a bump!) in my tummy is officially a person. We already have the first name and middle name picked out, so now we can call him by name, and it’s so fun! Love it! Dave, who grew up with four sisters and no brothers, is already dreaming of the sports he will play with the little guy. So cute!

And by the way, our little cake was only four inches in diameter, and you can bet we ate the whole thing that night. (I let Dave have two bites, so it counts as “we.”) The cream cheese frosting was MAGICAL!

(If you missed it and are interested, more talk of my first pregnancy can be found here: the announcement, first trimester recap, first trimester favorites and my long journey to pregnancy is coming soon!)

My favorite nut butter: Sunflower Seed

Well how do I follow up announcing that we’re having a boy? How about talk about my latest favorite nut butter, which I recently picked up at Trader Joe’s? It’s so darn good, I may need to add it to my Busy Gal’s Healthy Shopping List for Trader Joe’s. Mmmm! The ingredients are clean (only two of them on the label, which is the sign of a good nut butter), and it’s got a super creamy and slightly roasted and salty taste. I’m in love.

Yesterday, I switched back to almond butter for my morning toast just for the day and was so underwhelmed. It’s clear that sunflower seed butter is going to be a thing for a while. If you want to switch up your usual routine, give it a try. One jar at Trader Joe’s was only $5, and it lasted me about a week.

My favorite recent outing: 18 Rabbits Event

Last week, I went into the city on a Wednesday morning for a blog event hosted by the 18 Rabbits brand at Hotel G in the Union Square neighborhood of San Francisco. I was able to bring a guest, and so the beautiful Jill (LOVE HER) met me there.

We chatted, sampled some delicious and healthy 18 Rabbits organic granola and bars, and then did a 30-minute core and stretching workout with the group, taught by the owner of Rae Studios in the swanky side lobby of the hotel.

And want to know the best part? In addition to meeting the 18 Rabbits founder and hanging out with some old and new blogging friends, Jill was the winner of an overnight stay at Hotel G, and she gave it to me! So you can bet Dave and I will be using that soon. I haven’t really been attending a lot of events lately, and I’m glad I made the effort for this one — it was worth the BART ride to the City. Plus I came away with tasty and healthy snacks. Bonus!

My favorite reads from around the web

There’s been some good stuff floating around the Interwebs lately …

  • Have you ever tried working out on gliders or paper plates? It’s killer. Try Gina’s total-body towel workout.
  • Thank you for your feedback on this one I posted with your biggest fitness questions answered. More to come soon!
  • I’m not eating tuna right now, but I sure do love it. This is an interesting take on whether it’s safe to eat a ton of tuna poke.
  • As I’ve said before, I don’t track my macronutrients, and I think that some people can be WAY too obsessive with keeping their macros in check. However, once you learn what macros are, it does help you to make better choices overall. Knowing what’s a carb and what’s a fat really helps. This is a good look at the healthy changes you make when you notice macros. But please, don’t obsess!

And one more favorite, the Warriors swept round one of the playoffs and are moving on to round two. I went to one game during the first round last week with my lady friends, and it was super fun. Looking forward to round two as well. There’s nothing like a Golden State Warriors home playoff game!

By the way, I’ve been working hard on my first ebook, which is launching very soon, and I can’t wait to share it with you! Until then, have a FAB weekend!

Questions of the day

What are you up to this weekend?

What’s something great you’re loving lately?

, ,

  1. I wish they had done blue velvet for the inside! Though I think the blue frosting against the red velvet is rather striking. CONGRATULATIONS! I can’t imagine how real this is for you all now. And names. Oy. We are going to be starting at square 1 with our names–we named the dog the name we had picked out for a girl! lol. Have the best weekend, Ashley, and have fun celebrating!

    1. hahahah I actually really love the name Rudy for a boy too — but that’s taken by our dog as well — it happens. And picking out names is fun! We ended up deciding our both our boy and girl names within the first eight weeks of my pregnancy hahah! It was fun! Happy Friday to you, Susie!! πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Patricia! Red velvet is THE BEST! Our wedding cake had half of the tiers as red velvet too because I love it so much. And we’re SUPER pumped to know we’re having a little boy! Hope you have a great weekend too! πŸ™‚

  2. Congratulations!
I love sun butter too! The best part is that it is WAY more environmentally friendly than other nut butters (though I love them too) . It takes very little water to raise sunflowers- in some cases, farmers don’t have to water them AT ALL. For nuts like almonds … it takes a LOT.

I’ve been loving Trader Joe’s “everything but the bagel” seasoning lately! Also coffee – its finals time! πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Mikey! That’s so cool to know about the sun butter — thanks for sharing! And I haven’t tried the “everything but the bagel” spice but have heard that it’s absolutely delish, and a good spice can MAKE a meal. Thank you for saying hi! Hope you have a wonderful day and weekend! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks, lady! So cool to now know what we’re having, so it can be a person. Or he can be a person. ehhehe Still getting used to it! πŸ™‚ Happy Friday!

  3. Congratulations on your news, so exciting! I typically hate using this expression to describe pregnant women haha, but you are absolutely glowing in that picture, you look gorgeous! Congrats again! πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Ashley! You are soo sweet! Thank you for saying that! I’ve had a few people tell me I have that “glow” — whatever it is. And that feels good, because as you can imagine, I don’t exactly feel like I’m looking good lately ahahahha! The growing waist-line is amazing, but also less than attractive! Anyways, I really appreciate it, friend. Happy Friday to you! Have a wonderful day! πŸ™‚

    1. I sure hope the boy likes basketball. But if he doesn’t, we will love him anyway. heheheh! But he will have no choice but to be dressed in Warriors wear heheh! Happy Friday, Emily! I hope your day and weekend is awesome!! πŸ™‚

  4. Congratulations!!!! So so exciting!! I LOVE Sweet Affair Backery, it’s just a few blocks from my work! (And Yalla Mediterranean next door…so delish). And yes would love to meet you and go to a prenatal yoga class together sometime!

    1. Hi Maryann! YES, YES, YES! So cool that you are right here in Walnut Creek! And I will totally be back for more from Sweet Affair Bakery! Yalla is good too. I haven’t started prenatal yoga yet, but would LOVE to! πŸ™‚ Send me an email soon!! And until then, Happy Friday!!!!

    1. Yay for boys!!! I totally thought I was having a girl, so I was off. hehehhe! But the good thing is, I’m just as excited for a boy! πŸ™‚

  5. Yay!!!! I am so excited for you guys! When I saw your post on IG yesterday about the reveal today I just couldn’t wait to read this post! My oldest is a boy and I love it! He is the big protector of his younger brother and sister. It makes my heart happy!
Thanks for sharing your exciting news and have a great weekend!

  6. So happy for you! Little boys are so sweet! I wanted a girl and Matt wanted a boy. Truthfully, I was terrified of having a little boy because I didn’t have any brothers and swore I would not know what I was doing. 7 months in and I can say that it is absolutely amazing. I love being his mom and if I do it again, I would be thrilled to have another little boy. I’m so happy for you and Dave!

    1. Hi Doc! Oh that is so nice to hear! I can’t wait to see what motherhood is like, and I love to know that you are enjoying it so much with your boy!! πŸ™‚

  7. Oh boy; that’s so exciting!!!!! I love gender reveals; they are always really fun. I love seeing the parent’s reactions.

This weekend we’ll be going to church, cleaning, and staying cozy (hopefully) during the winter storm that’s supposed to happen here. πŸ™‚

    1. It was so fun to cut into that cake! And your weekend sound relaxing! Except for the storm — hope it’s not too bad! Happy Friday, Emily! πŸ™‚

  8. YESSSS!! Welcome to team blue!!!!! Boys are the BEST, crazy, outrageous but the best!!!! ( though I’m bias) …plus people love girls clothes but I actually think boys clothes can be pretty darn cute too! I found once I knew the gender I felt much more of a connection to the pregnancy…so glad you had a great week! Happy friday friend!

    1. I DEFINITELY feel more of a connection to the pregnancy now that I know the gender. And I hope to find some SUPER cute boy clothes heheh! πŸ™‚ Thanks, Fiona! Happy Friday!

  9. Exciting! I can imagine it feeling way more real knowing “he” versus “it”, haha.

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Congratulations to you and Dave! So exciting to have a little boy. Now you get to shop for little sports gear! Very happy for you.

  11. So happy for you ! What a cute way to do the announcement. Love the cake its so yummy. A future basketball player no doubt ! Remember all fish is poisoned from the radiation from the Japan Nuclear reactor explosion a few years ago and fish is no longer safe in any form or type, especially when pregnant , its all full of radiation. Stay clear of fish.

  12. Yay! Congratulations on the big gender reveal! (I mean, we’d all be excited if it were a girl too, but the whole thing is super exciting.) Are you planning on sharing the name before he’s born?

And holy smokes, that cake looks amazing to this pregnant lady. Not sure my husband would’ve gotten any bites in . . . πŸ˜‰

    1. Thanks so much Marissa! I think we’re going to keep the name to us until he arrives! πŸ™‚ And I think I should celebrate at least weekly with a cake in honor of one more week of pregnancy under my belt, right? hahahha! Hope you had a great weekend, lady! πŸ™‚
