A friend-filled weekend and my weekly workout recap
Hi friends! I hope you had a good weekend! Did you celebrate Earth Day? I tried to get outside a little bit, so that was nice. Let’s do a quick weekend recap and then get to the standard weekly workout report.
Ladies dinner at Maria Maria in Walnut Creek
So listen to this: In my group of friends, there is another gal who is due with her first baby in October, just like me. And neither of us knew that the other one was pregnant until just a couple of weeks ago, and we even hung out once at a party and both awkwardly drank water and never asked the other why heheheh. But, the funnier part is that we had one friend who knew about us both and was dying to tell us, so we could talk about it. Anyways, the secrets are out now, and so our little group of ladies decided to get together to celebrate the new pregnancies with a dinner at old favorite, Maria Maria in Walnut Creek.
(On my last day of week 14 before dinner and still wearing regular clothes to hide the growing bump. Top, pants, shoes and purse.)
We met up on Friday night for some girl talk, chips and guacamole and Mexican fare (I had some very spicy salmon), and the non-pregnant ladies also enjoyed margaritas (and I jealously watched them sip those beautifully salted rims from afar).
Although I love hanging out with our full group of couples and also love hanging out just with Dave, there’s something to be said for a night out with girls only. The conversations can be hilariously raw, and I certainly enjoy that. We talked a lot about kids and pregnancy, but made sure to veer off onto all the other subjects on our mind as well. Good times were had by all! I made it home around 10 p.m., just in time to change into my favorite jammy pants (which are on sale right now, and I’m happy to report that many of you decided to order these after I included them on Friday in my first trimester pregnancy favorites, by the way!) and snuggle with Rudy and Dave.
Gym, lunch, cookies and an informal watch party
On Saturday, Dave wanted to get a workout in, so I agreed to accompany him to our local gym. I did my usual five minutes of incline walking on the treadmill, some foam rolling, some dynamic warm-up moves, then completed just under 20 minutes of full-body work on the TRX. Dave did some cardio, and we met up at the end, making it out of the gym in less than 45 minutes total. I was actually craving the organization of a class setting on Saturday, but didn’t quite make the right times to attend anything, so I was on my own. My workout was fine, but not the greatest.
(Foam roller, water bottle, leggings and sneakers — so comfy)
Later that day, we ventured out to the Sweet Affair Bakery in Walnut Creek to check out the cake selection. A friend told me that Sweet Affair was the best, and I hope that’s true, because we ordered a cake for later in the week (when we find out the gender of the babe, OMG!). Dave and I both thought it was the cutest little spot, and all of the bakery goods looked totally delicious (as did the lunch food being delivered to tables while we waited in line).
In fact, in addition to ordering a cake, we also picked up some super-decadent peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies to take on the road. Dave ate his on the way to lunch, but I saved mine for my post-lunch dessert. (And that was my first of many cookies that day. Truth.)
From there, big surprise, we went to Lettuce for huge salads and sat outside to eat them. For the benefit of the blog, we could have branched out, but quite honestly, I knew exactly what I wanted, and it just happened to be the same thing that I had for the last few lunches on the last few Saturdays. Oh well!
The rest of the afternoon was pretty insignificant. Dave went to the driving range, and I did some lounging around at home with Rudy. (I do a lot of lounging between activities these days to reenergize, as you can see. When I start to feel a little tired, Dave and I call it “petering out,” and it happens a lot!)
Then, in the evening and at the very last minute, we decided to have another couple over to our place to watch the Warriors away playoff game against the Portland Trailblazers. We wore our casuals, and our friends arrived just before the game with a super rich deep-dish take-out pizza in hand for dinner for the four of us. It was a nice low-key night. And the Warriors won!
For a sweet bite, I made some healthier carrot cake cookies (some with Greek yogurt cream cheese frosting), and they were super good. And by the way, making Greek yogurt cream cheese frosting is incredibly easy, and I’m slightly scared that I know how to do it now. No pictures were taken that evening, but I do have a shot of the cookies. I made this cookie recipe, adding raisins, then I made the Greek yogurt cream cheese frosting recipe here to add on top. Great combo, made with whole wheat flour and oats. Yum!
All the usual Sunday things and a nice walk
On Sunday, Dave was off golfing, so Rudy and I did some chores and work and took a walk. It was beautiful outside, so we tried to soak up the sun and went on a 40-minute stroll on the Iron Horse Trail near my house.
While cruising, I listened to some pregnancy podcasts, which some of you lovely readers suggested to me, and they were very entertaining and educational. The trail was busy (of course, on a nice Sunday), so I actually ended up carrying Rudy for at least a quarter of our time. He loves that!
Once Dave was home in the evening, we made a nice dinner and caught another episode of our guilty-pleasure, “Shameless.” And that was the weekend! Just enough activity and downtime, I’d say.

Overview of the week of workouts
This past week of workouts was a balanced one. I taught my usual three classes, took a couple of classes, did a workout on my own and practiced some barre at home as well, so overall, the week had a good amount of variety. There was a full rest day and three days of a lighter load, which counteracts my very tough Thursday, in which I teach two classes. The good thing about Thursdays is that I have many hours in between those two classes to rest and hydrate before returning for more. As always, my goal was to lift weights three times, and I did meet that (with two more mini-sessions if you count the very light hand-weights we use in Bootybarre too). A good week of fitness, for sure!
Hope you have a fab day, my friends! Coming up this week? Fitness tips and the big gender reveal. See you soon!

Questions of the day
How was your weekend?
What was the last thing you celebrated?
Sounds like an A+++ weekend! I had a great weekend too–from Cavalia, to naps, to just ALL the sunshine. I’ve gotten to the point where it is just useless for me to take pictures of my salads–people already know what I am eating! BUT THEY ARE SO GOOD!
hahahha! Susie!! SO funny! I would love to see Cavalia! So happy that you got to see that and taking naps is always a good idea. I took one this weekend too! Happy Monday! 🙂
Maria Maria is such a fun spot and they have great food!! Woah, I need to check out that bakery- I’ve never heard of it, but that cookie looks fantastic!! Sounds like a fun-filled weekend. The weather was amazing this weekend, so we had a picnic in Fort Mason with views of the GG bridge!
Ohhhh how I LOVE a good park day at Fort Mason, and it’s been too long since I’ve been! Soak that up, lady! Glad to hear you got outside. Happy Monday, my friend! Perhaps Maria Maria and the Sweet Affair Bakery is worth a trip to the East Bay for you? 🙂
For some reason, when I pictured the cake you mentioned, I pictured it PINK (though I’m a boy mom, and love every minute of it)!? #teampink
Hi Lindsay! I’ve had a lot of people saying they thing I’m having a girl, but we shall see!! 🙂 heheh! Hope you had a great weekend! Stay tuned!
That’s awesome you have another friend pregnant right along with you. You ladies can commiserate and celebrate together.

Hi Erica! YAYYYY for you! Congrats on your little girl arriving this year! Woohoo! How have you been feeling??? 🙂
Ah I can’t believe you find out the gender this week, that’s so excited! I think with a cake is the perfect way to do it!
TOTALLY! I love cake, so why wouldn’t we want to find out in a food? hahah! Thanks, Patricia!
Sweet Affair is my favorite bakery hands down! They have these frosted cookies that are all seasonal (Eggs for easter, footballs for fall), etc.. So good! Plus their brownies are to die for.
Ummm Sweet Affair sweets are AMAZING! We are going back for more. Brownies? YES! hehehe! Hope you had a nice weekend and your week is off to a great start! 🙂
