A hot weekend and my weekly workouts

Hi, friends! I hope your weekend was awesome. It is SO darn hot right now, but other than that, our weekend was good. Even though we moved out of the City to Walnut Creek more than two years ago, I am still shocked at how hot it gets during the summers in Walnut Creek compared to living in downtown San Francisco (where the summer is the coldest part of the year). But anyways, let’s chat about the last couple of days and about my latest week of workouts at 22 weeks pregnant.

Highlights from the weekend

Friday lunch date at Urban Plates with Dave

Dave had Friday off of work (thanks to the Warriors Finals win earlier in the week), so we went out for lunch at Urban Plates, which was a nice little change of pace for me on a Friday. I usually eat most of my weekday meals at home while working on the computer, and I definitely enjoyed the outing.

Later that evening, I taught Bootybarre and that concluded my workouts for the week. We made burgers at home and continued working through the latest season of “House of Cards.”

Speaking of HOC, I feel like so much has happened over all the seasons that I have forgotten a ton, so I went back and read the recaps for the first four seasons and now feel much more up to date. 🙂

Saturday birthday party with friends in Santa Cruz

On Saturday, after a pancake breakfast at home, Dave, Rudy and I hopped in the car to head to Santa Cruz for a little girl’s birthday party at a friends’ house. We had a great time, except for one thing: the traffic was horrible.

We weren’t the only ones heading to this sunny beach destination, and a trip that should have taken just over an hour, took more than two hours both there and back, because of the amount of cars on the road. Ugh!

Everyone from our usual group of friends was at the party, (and all of them showed up late like we did, because they were in the same traffic) and we all had a delicious lunch, tasty birthday cake and some play time for a few hours together.

This was our second Saturday in a row with a little girl’s party — and that’s just life in the ‘burbs, friends. I like it! Also, there were three other small dogs at the party, so Rudy had an excellent time running around like crazy.

And how cute were these party favors that everyone got to take home? Mermaid cookie ingredients for a mermaid-themed party!

Dinner at Benvenuti Ristorante in Walnut Creek

On Saturday night, Dave and I went out to try the newly revamped Benvenuti Ristorante in Walnut Creek, which used to be Salvatore Ristorante. It looks nice and fresh inside with the redesign, but still has classic Italian food on the menu.

As usual, we sat at the bar and ordered a few things to share. Our meal highlights included the warm white bread and red dipping sauce at the start (why is that always the greatest part of any Italian meal?), the grass-fed beef meatballs appetizer and the homemade pasta entree, which we shared.

Dave and I have always loved going out to dinner a lot on the weekends and that slowed down the first part of my pregnancy when I wasn’t feeling well. So we are trying to make up for lost time by getting in at least one nice meal out a week until the baby arrives!

Oh and before dinner, we stumbled upon this fun red wall in downtown Walnut Creek and had to take some pics in front of it …

Walking, pooling and lunching on Sunday

On Sunday morning, Dave and I were waffling on whether or not to go to the gym, and we opted to skip it. Instead, I took Rudy for a 25-minute walk along the trail near our place, and it ended up being WAY too hot for that. Rudy didn’t seem to want to be out there, and I was sweating from the outset, and because I felt bad for him, I carried him most of the way. I was quickly reminded why walking should only be done in the early morning or evening when the summer hits. Yuck!

After the walk, I joined Dave at the pool for a short bit to lay out, catch some rays on the bump and swim. Then, we got all cleaned up and headed out for lunch at Koja Kitchen, followed by some freezes from Pressed Juicery and a few random errands.

We ate dinner at home and chilled, and that was pretty much the weekend. It was actually quite similar to last weekend, now that I’ve written it all down. ehhehe But we’ll be switching things up throughout the rest of the summer, as we try to fit in a bunch of fun stuff!

My weekly workout recap

Switching gears, here are my latest workouts …

Overview of the week of workouts

This past week of workouts was a little lighter than I have been doing lately. I got a substitute teacher to cover my own BODYPUMP class on Thursday, so I could attend the Warriors parade — so instead, I took a second BODYPUMP class the day before. My strength sessions came from two BODYPUMP classes, and I got some cardio and flexibility work in with the two barre classes I taught. I also had two full rest days and one light day of just mobility.

Overall, based on the fact that workouts are getting increasingly hard as my tummy grows, I’m okay with the amount of work I accomplished this past week, although I definitely miss the feeling of hot yoga and could have probably used a little bit more weightlifting. Oh well!

Have a fab start to your week, friends! See you back here for some more fitness stuff soon!

    1. Hi Emily! Ohhh man, I think it’s hotter there than it is here. And yes — lots of inside time in the air conditioner going on over here. Hope you had a good weekend in spite of the heat! 🙂

  1. I LOVE that dress you wore Saturday night! Also, I can totally relate to how you feel with the heat; I always forget this time of year just how rough Florida heat can get.

    1. Thank you, Emily! It’s a local brand, and I’m going to share more about that probably this week. I honestly think that humid heat in Florida may actually be worse than the dry heat we are getting here. But at least you get those afternoon showers sometimes heheh! Happy Monday, friend!

  2. Omg that dress, Ashley! You are stunning in it! I feel you on the summer traffic–it is impossible to get anywhere right now. It kind of takes the enjoyment out of it! We have been really spoiled with how great our weather has been, but I’m totally waiting for the other shoe to drop, you know? Have a great week!

    1. Hi Susie! Ohhhh I want to experience the beauty of the 100 days of Chicago summer one day. Not this year though! 🙂 And yes, you have to deal with crowds and traffic too, and that’s because you also live in a desirable area. I guess its our own faults hahah! 🙂 Happy Monday, my friend!

  3. Aw those pics, you look beautiful! I love the red wall background. And I had a baby shower about an hour away on Saturday and I was so frustrated with traffic , it seems to be getting worse and worse in our area which is frustrating. And Mmmm Korean BBQ is one of my new favorite things, so delicious!

After usually indulging a bit on the weekends I crave a cardio workout on Mondays, then it’s usually all about strength the rest of the week. Happy Monday!

    1. Hi Patricia! Yay for baby showers — so fun! And I feel ya — I actually always look forward to healthier meals and a good workout on Monday, because weekends tend to have less activity and more treats heheh! 🙂 But I wouldn’t give up those weekend treats for anything! Hope your cardio sesh went well today, lady! 🙂

    1. I heard it was hot in the City! So rare heheh! Especially without having an A/C that can be difficult. Hope your weekend was great in spite of that, Carrie! 🙂

  4. I really noticed that we’re kind of spoiled here in Colorado when it comes to traffic when my sister and I were in California about a week and a half ago. L.A. was CRAZY!

And that dress you were wearing is GORGEOUS! 🙂 You look so good in flowers.

    1. Hi Emily! Yes, — LA is ALWAYS crazy with traffic, that’s for sure. And I’ve never really been to Colorado and would love to check it out one day! Happy Monday, lady! Hope your weekend was good!

  5. Ooo I can’t even get over how delicious all this food looks. Italian dinners are a favorite of mine. Recently, I’ve been really craving trail running. I just love how refreshing the air is! I feel like I can breath so much better surrounded by all those trees. Looks like you had an amazing weekend 🙂 !

    xxMeah

    1. Hi Meah! Sounds awesome! I also love the feeling of being in the outdoors and under the trees — and it’s been a while since I’ve done that. And agreed, Italian food is always a winner. Happy Monday, girl!! 🙂

  6. You look gorgeous in the flowery dress against the red back drop.

I’m glad you had a wonderful weekend and got to enjoy random lunches out with Dave and the Warriors parade. The only downside appears to be the traffic and the heat, and at least you can cool off by the pool.

Happy Monday and have a great week.

    1. I mean, a red wall is a great backdrop for a pic, you know heheh! 🙂 Lots of Warriors fun recently, but it’s the off-season now, so we don’t have to talk about it anymore hahah! Happy Monday, Meghan! 🙂

  7. Hey Ashley! Looks like you had a fun week! It definitely does get colder in San Francisco then like everywhere else in cali haha!

I see that you do BODYPUMP workouts. I was looking into it but also was considering getting Kayla Itsines BBG instead. So I wondered.. have you ever tried her program?? I read a review on http://www.thebbgreview.com and it seems like it’s a little expensive. Would love to hear your opinion! Need to get rid of baby fat ASAP

    Thanks so much. xx Emily

    1. Hi Emily! I haven’t tried any of the BBG programs, but I will tell you that they generally include a lot of reps and your own bodyweight and you do them at home on a plan. That does give you plenty of flexibility, and also the workouts are short — so people tend to stick to them. As far as BODYPUMP, which I teach – it’s a full-hour class using weights with an instructor, so you get a MAJOR burn and work on your muscles, meaning you will boost your metabolism. But you have to go to a gym that offers BODYPUMP (or you can order the videos and equipment for home). I’m a BIG fan of working out in the group setting, because I feel like I work harder, so I always choose that option. But if you need to be home with your little ones, then the BBG program could be right for you — it will have it all laid out. Good luck!! 🙂

  8. That dress is so pretty! I love all the floral prints, so fun!
Good job on your workouts, it feels so good to be able to continue to be active during your pregnancy! I feel like it really helps you bounce back quicker!

    1. Hi Bethany! I got certified to teach BODYPUMP through the Les Mills organization several years ago. You can find out more on lesmills.com! 🙂
