A weekend of food, fitness and relaxation

Hey hey, my friends! Are you refreshed from the last two days and ready for a new week? Hope so! It was a very low-key weekend over here in Walnut Creek, following up on all the events of last weekend, and we enjoyed it. But let’s talk about the weather … it went from sunny, to stormy, back to sunny, down into the low 50s, back up into the upper 60s and repeated. I mean, what? I’m ready to pull out the sundresses, but just when I put some self-tanner on my pasty legs, it’s back into my jeans, you know? 

A few highlights from the weekend

I started my Saturday with my usual breakfast of sprouted Alvarado Street Bakery toast, topped with raw almond butter, goji berries, raw pumpkin seeds and chia seeds, followed by a short gym trip.

Originally, I had planned to take the entire weekend off of exercise (because I get enough during the week these days), but Dave was heading to the gym, so I decided to accompany him. While he did some cardio, I opted for a 3-minute treadmill incline walk, followed by foam rolling, dynamic mobility moves and a short 15-minute full-body circuit on the TRX. (Don’t you love the green turf from the gym floor?)

When I’m not sure what I feel like doing, or when the gym floor is super busy (like it was on a rainy Saturday late morning), the TRX is always a safe station. I only need one set of straps and a little bit of floor space to do legs, core, arms, back and chest and don’t have to navigate sharing equipment for sets. On this day, I did chest-presses, low-rows and hamstring curls — 3 sets of 12-15 reps per move. It worked! I finished up before Dave, so I posted up on a gym bench and did some casual people watching, which I LOVE, until he was done.

Later that day included some errands and lunch at Lettuce in downtown Walnut Creek. I always like to make my own salad, and I added some mango to my usual creation of greens, artichoke, roasted red pepper, avocado and grilled salmon. So good and so filling! Dave ordered his usual chipotle chopped chicken, and he was pleased as well.

That night, we watched the Warriors game, made an oven pizza and chilled. I mean, I told you it was low-key. In fact, we had been out and about and were all dressed to go out to dinner, but I took one look at Rudy and knew I wanted to stay home and veg instead. It happens!

On Sunday, we did some random things and ended up one town over in Lafayette for a delicious outdoor lunch at the Coffee Shop. My Asian chicken salad was phenomenal, and it was even better because I ate it in the sunshine.

I’m glad it was good, because Coffee Shop also has an avocado toast on the menu, and I literally toiled for four minutes before deciding on my salad. I chose well! (Do you ever do that? Like seriously take far too long to order as though it’s the biggest decision ever, and clearly it’s not?)

Not a lot else happened that day. Dave went to the driving range and found that it was sort’ve under construction. And I went shopping to look for something that I couldn’t find. Really successful outings. We followed that up with some couch time (to write this post) and dinner at home. Did I mention this weekend was low-key? I almost didn’t write about it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Moving on …

  • Monday: Took a one-hour BODYPUMP class, 10 a.m.
  • Tuesday: Taught a one-hour Bootybarre class, 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Taught a one-hour Bootybarre class, 11 a.m.
  • Thursday: Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, 8:30 a.m. and taught a one-hour Bootybarre class, 5:30 p.m.
  • Friday: Taught a one-hour Bootybarre class, 4 p.m. 
  • Saturday: Did a 15-minute full-body TRX workout, 11 a.m.
  • Sunday: Rest day

Overview of the week of workouts

This past week was full of Bootybarre, because I got asked to sub two classes at the last minute, in addition to the classes that I already teach each week. The good thing about Bootybarre is that it’s low-impact, uses very light hand-weights for a short time and has some cardio and flexibility, so it’s definitely safe to do on consecutive days. I combined that with two BODYPUMP classes (one that I taught, and one that I took), and then threw in a very short solo workout for good measure. I know I keep saying this, but even though I get some flexibility work in Bootybarre, I am definitely missing the sweat from a hot yoga class. Maybe I’ll be back one day! Overall, it was a full week, and I felt great.

  2. The weather was amazing!!! It’s been so crazy here.. hah, let’s hope we get more sunshine! I’ve never been to coffee shop, but that salad looks huge. I love big salads! I FINALLY went to a Warrior’s game!!! Dane surprised me!! It was SO much fun.

    1. Hi Carrie! I saw that!! Woohooooo! Yay for a Warriors game. Did you love it? Even those Steph wasn’t playing, of course – it was a win and KD was back, so that’s great! And Coffee Shop has awesome options! Next time you’re in the Creek, hit it up! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. 1. I always take too long to decide what to order, unless it’s a restaurant I go to regularly, in which case I order the exact same thing Every. Single. Time.

  4. Sometimes low key weekends are the best! And as far as food decisions and picking a nail polish color I take wayyyyy too long to do both, lol. And I usually run either on the treadmill or outside about three times a week, I love strength training, but cardio’s probably my fave.

    1. Hi Patricia! It’s easy to clear your mind and thinking during a run, right? I don’t love cardio or running, but when running was my primary form of exercise, I remember making SO many decisions while running heheh! Happy Monday, lady!

  5. Love that you got in so many fun Body Pump and Booty Barre workouts; I’ve been wanting to try some Barre workouts because they look like they are lower impact but they’re also strengthening!

    1. Hi Emily! That’s the great thing about barre and why so many people love it — it’s good for EVERYONE. You can be a total beginner and do well in class. The movements are small, but effective, and there’s no jumping around. I LOVE barre work! Hope you get to make it to a class or do an online version soon. Happy Monday!

  6. I love that you still wrote about your weekend. Restful is the best! Saturday we were going to go to Beauty and the Beast, but it was sold out, so we hung out with friends instead and it was perfect. Thanks for posting your workouts – I’m loving strength training right now. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Restful is pretty nice! And you’re right — good thing I wrote about it to show that NOT A LOT happens around here on the weekends too hehehe. Ohhh man, I want to see Beauty and the Beast, but Dave won’t go. I’ll need to ask a girlfriend! Maybe you can see the movie next weekend? ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Monday, lady!

    We had a great weekend here, finally SPRING IS HERE, we went to our local farm which Sully loved then to the Sugar bush (where they make maple syrup…soo Canadian) it was just a gorgeous weekend so great to be out and getting a tan on well my face at least! lol

  8. YOU KNOW… If you throw a picture of salmon in my face, my mind immediately goes blank and just thinks about salmon. So wait, what else happened to you this weekend? LOL. I just know some delicious salmon went in your face ๐Ÿ˜‰
