All about what it’s like to be a Beautycounter consultant

June 2, 2020 By Ashley 2 Comments

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a Beautycounter consultant? I’m going tell you all about it today!

I’ve been a consultant with Beautycounter for a year-and-a-half (at the time of writing this post). And I wish I had jumped on board sooner than I did. I had no idea that I would love being a part of this mission as much as I do. And while I originally joined just to get a discount on the safe skincare and makeup that I was already buying, I ended up wanting to do much more with it.

Today, I make a portion of my overall income from Beautycounter, I’ve grown a small team (including two really good friends, YAY), and I absolutely love to introduce people to safer skincare and makeup (because this is the wave of the future and something we should all care about). Beautycounter is definitely one of my favorite parts of my business.

Let’s get into the details …

All about what it’s like to be a Beautycounter consultant

What it's like to be a Beautycounter consultant by A Lady Goes West

What is Beautycounter?

Beautycounter is a company that sells clean, nontoxic and safely formulated skincare, makeup and personal care products for women, men and children.

Beautycounter has a website as well as a few retail locations across the U.S..

Not only is Beautycounter a Certified B Corporation (which means that the company focuses on balancing profit and purpose, doing good in the world), but Beautycounter is also a woman-created company, with an incredibly powerful mission.

Beautycounter is trying to get clean products into the hands of more people, while trying to change the beauty and skincare industry in the U.S. and Canada for the better. Currently, there hasn’t been any meaningful personal care product legislation to protect consumers since 1938 in the U.S., and the federal government doesn’t have the power to recall or test individual products in the personal care space like they do in the food space.

Here’s what the Beautycounter website says …

One by one, we are leading a movement to a future where all beauty is clean beauty. We are powered by people, and our collective mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. Formulate, advocate and educate — that’s our motto for creating products that truly perform while holding ourselves to unparalleled standards of safety. Why? It’s really this simple: Beauty should be good for you.”

There’s a huge purpose. And when you join as a consultant, you will see that. There’s a ton of advocacy work going on behind the scenes in order to spark change. I love that, because you know you are part of the mission. A mission to formulate, advocate and educate.

  • Beautycounter was the first company to come up with a “Never List” of ingredients that the company will not use in its formulations. Many other companies have followed suit, but none are as strict as Beautycounter — vowing never to use more than 1,800 ingredients (whereas in the U.S., only 30 ingredients are actually illegal for use). You can see the Never List here.
  • Beautycounter is working to put more transparency into the mica sourcing industry, which is heavily used in cosmetics. Here’s a documentary Beautycounter produced that’s pretty eye opening.
  • Beautycounter works tirelessly to advocate for change in the skincare and personal care product industry to make it safer and healthier for consumers.

What is a Beautycounter consultant?

A Beautycounter consultant is someone who signs up to not only sell Beautycounter products, but also to help educate and empower people to choose safer and better personal care products. When you become a consultant, you join a movement — and it’s a strong movement that is just going to keep getting stronger.

Who can become a Beautycounter consultant?

Anyone! This opportunity is open to men and women in the United States and Canada currently.

You don’t have to have any skincare or makeup experience. You don’t have to have sales experience. You don’t have to be a blogger. And you most certainly don’t need to know anything about the beauty industry either.

People from all walks of life can do well as a consultant. I know stay-at-home moms, doctors, bloggers, executive assistants and nurses who are Beautycounter consultants. I also know many people who have started out with Beautycounter as a side hustle and ended up quitting their full-time jobs because they didn’t need them any longer. Anything is possible.

Much like my own story, many people who become Beautycounter consultants have been on healthy living journeys and found their way to safer products in order to improve some aspect of their lives. They see such positive differences, that they want to shout that message from the rooftops. I fall into this bucket too, as someone who healed her hormones and now actively tries to avoid endocrine disruptors, which are present in many conventional skincare and makeup products you find in stores.

How much time do you have to devote each week to being a consultant?

That’s the “beauty” of this business.

You can put in as little or as much as you want into it. If you only have one hour for Beautycounter each week, that’s fine. But if you have five hours each week, that’s fine too. You get out of it what you put in it.

On average, I spend about three to four hours a week on my Beautycounter business right now. Sometimes it’s more, sometimes it’s less. And the things that I work on during those three to four hours are so enjoyable, like helping people pick out the right products for their skin or chatting with team members about ideas for growth and much more.

We have a very active Beautycounter consultant Facebook group where you can go and ask just about any question you want and immediately get support. I’ve been so impressed with how collaborative and supportive everyone is. It’s not competitive at all, which is a breath of fresh air.

How is Beautycounter different from other direct sales companies? Do you have to recruit?

You don’t have to recruit a team to be successful in Beautycounter.

It’s not a requirement to recruit new people to your team in order to earn an income. And this is a big differentiating factor. You can earn a great income just from selling Beautycounter on your own and many people do it this way, and I did it this way for the first six months too.

In fact, that was initially my intention with Beautycounter — just to get a discount and sell a little here and there. However, once I had someone want to join my team, I realized how much I absolutely loved the team aspect.

In addition, another differentiating factor is that someone can buy Beautycounter directly from a retail store or the website without the help of a consultant at all. But, most people prefer to have the help of a consultant.

Also, Beautycounter is a no-pressure, no-spamming type of company, if you know what I mean.

Do you have to buy a lot of products to be a consultant?

No. You don’t have to buy any products if you don’t want to. But I’m pretty sure you’re going to want to.

You don’t have to have a big inventory at all, because your customers purchase for themselves directly on the website. But it’s always great to have and use a selection of products, so you can recommend them to people.

For me, I buy only what I need and use. And well, almost everything in my skincare and makeup routine is from Beautycounter, and I like it this way. Because the products are amazing, and I love almost everything I try.

What it's like to be a consultant with Beautycounter - by A Lady Goes West - June 2020

What are the perks of being a Beautycounter consultant?

  • Fun: I had no idea how much I would enjoy learning, sharing and selling.
  • Connection: Building relationships with clients and your team is the best.
  • Teamwork: I’ve found my fellow consultants on my team to be so incredibly supportive. I have a text group with two of my really good friends who are also consultants, and we’re always helping each other along. I love it.
  • Education: Helping people improve their skin and clean up their personal care products. Also, personally, I’ve learned so much about how to take better care of my skin.
  • Discounts: You get 25 percent off almost all of the products on the Beautycounter site, and that’s worth its weight in gold.
  • Resources: You get access to a huge backend of resources to learn about skincare, makeup and more.
  • Income: You have a personal website you can share with others and make money off sales. You can make a lot of money or a little money, depending on how much you sell.
  • Pre-sales: You get the chance to purchase and try out brand new products at special consultant-only pre-sale prices.

What are the selling requirements to be a consultant?

In order to stay an active consultant, you have to sell $1,200 of volume over a six-month period and that can include your own purchases as well.

Believe it or not, some people sign up just for the discount and end up buying all their own skincare and makeup from Beautycounter and meet their quota.

This quota is very easy to meet, because the average order is around $150 to $200, which means you only need a few orders to be set for six months.

If for some reason you don’t meet your quota, you simply drop down to being a Band of Beauty member instead of a consultant. You keep all of your products, and you really have nothing to lose.

How much does it cost to sign up?

Typically, it costs $98 to sign up and enroll as a Beautycounter consultant, and that fee includes your personal selling website, access to backend resources, a Beautycounter tote bag, marketing materials and two hero Beautycounter products (like the overnight resurfacing peel and a lipstick).

However, right now, through the end of June, Beautycounter is offering a digital enrollment kit, which is only $50, and this includes a personal selling website and access to backend resources only — but no products. This is an awesome deal, and you really only need to sell $200 worth of product to make your money back.

However, when you sign up, it’s a great idea to get some starter sets, which are ONLY available when you enroll, and they are super-discounted sets of products that you can use keep, lend out or use as samples to grow your business.

I highly recommend getting a starter set. I got the smallest starter set and wish I had gotten more, because the products are even more discounted than you usually get once you become a consultant. Plus, it helps to have things on hand to talk about, show people and try out. Whatever you get in your starter set is yours to keep, so it’s money worth spending.

How can I sign up to become a consultant?

It’s super easy to sign up. Visit this website and enroll. You will need to select a mentor, and I’d LOVE to have you on my team.

Once you sign up, you’ll get an email with your personal selling website, and you can begin selling immediately.

Typically, you’ll do a welcome call with your mentor, start watching some short training videos and then announce to your family and friends that you’ve joined Beautycounter, and you’re ready to go. It’s super quick and easy. And you can get your business going at your own pace.

Once you’re on board, it’s up to you how much time you spend moving forward.

How much do Beautycounter consultants make?

There is a huge range here.

As a consultant, you can make anywhere from 25 to 35 percent commission off your sales. Then, you get a very small percentage (about 3 to 9 percent) off the sales that your team members make. If you sell more, you make more. If you have a bigger team, you make more.

I know people making $250 dollars each month, and I know people making $25,000 each month. For real, the range is huge. There’s really no limit to what you can make.

Once again, you get out of it what you put into it.

Do you have to host parties and put orders in for people?

No and no. You don’t have to host events, and you also don’t have to input orders for your customers.

Clients can order from the website themselves, like they are ordering from any online retailer, however they just click a box that they are shopping “with a consultant.”

Believe me, I don’t think I would enjoy this as much, if I was taking credit card numbers and inputing orders all day. The thing is, you can put in orders for people, but you probably won’t need to.

As far as events, that’s totally up to you. I have only hosted one event, and it was a workshop that included a barre workout and sparkling wine. It was super fun and not sales-y. I actually want to host another event one day, because it was such a good way to get people together.

Beautycounter gives you all the tools you need to host events, but it’s not a requirement.

Is there pressure to sell or recruit once you become a consultant?

This is a no-pressure business.

I think that’s what I love about it. We get a ton of support, tools and tips for how to grow our own businesses, but we’re never pressured. It’s not about that at all.

It’s taking this opportunity and these products and sharing them, however it feels right to you.

Some people run with it, some people don’t. And you’ll never know unless you try!

Closing thoughts on what it’s like to be a Beautycounter consultant …

Here’s the deal …

I never expected to sign up for a direct sales company. I had seen too many people sign up for other direct sales companies and do things the wrong way. But I haven’t seen anyone from Beautycounter do things the wrong way.

I have absolutely loved learning more about safer personal care products, sharing that information with others, connecting with people, and of course, making an impact and an income. I love this company and want to see more people getting involved. The products work. The mission is amazing. And this is fun.

If you have any interest in learning more, please send me an email and we can chat. (ashley @ aladygoeswest.com). I’d love to help you figure out if this is a good fit for you. And if it is, then we’d get to be teammates!

Have a great day, friends! Thank you for being here and for reading!

Friend! I’m so happy I’m on your team and couldn’t love Beautycounter products and being a part of this movement for safer products more. Just think if I joined back in 2016 when I wanted to! Also, love these pics 🙂

The latest on Instagram

I've got to be honest, I'm much more of a writer t I've got to be honest, I'm much more of a writer than an Instagrammer and many times I feel like what I want to share doesn't fit well into a grid. But I'm able to bring much more long-form content to my blog each week. Speaking of that, this week, I debuted a new series called "A Lady Goes West Advice Corner" which has been something I've wanted to put together for a while. In this series, I'm taking totally anonymous questions from YOU and giving you some neutral third-party advice on it all. Here are the questions I addressed in the first advice corner edition:
.
-“I became a first-time mom last spring and am currently dealing with all things motherhood. How do I deal with my expectations vs. reality of being a mom?" (such a good one, and I've been there)
-“How do you deal with days when you don't love your body? I think we can all relate to looking in the mirror and being disappointed with what we see?" (this happens to us all)
-“How do you deal with comparing yourself to others on social media and not feeling like everyone is doing things better than you?" (spoiler alert: everyone has their issues that you don't see)
.
The answers are long, they come from my heart, and I hope they can provide some value to you! If this is something you're interested in, head over to A Lady Goes West today to check it out, and you can submit a question for the next edition.

HOME! We closed on and moved into our home in Char HOME! We closed on and moved into our home in Charlotte over the weekend, and we're so excited to get settled in our new neighborhood, city and state after many weeks of transition. In honor of this momentous occasion, I thought it would be fun to look back at the places Dave and I have lived together over the last 12 years. Here's what it has looked like -- and each place has been special for different reasons:
.
-2009-2012 in a high-rise condo in downtown Orlando, where we lived when we got married.
-2012-2013 in a one-bedroom apartment in South of Market in San Francisco, which was always freezing no matter the time of day or year.
-2013-2014 in a tiny studio apartment in Nob Hill in San Francisco, which was only 550-square-feet, but we could hear the cable cars out of our always-open windows, so that was cool.
-2014-2017 in a two-bedroom townhouse in Walnut Creek, where we brought home both Rudy and Brady and had many sleepless nights.
-2017-2021 in a house that we owned in Pleasant Hill outside of San Francisco, which was across the street from a Starbucks so we went there way too often.
.
And now we're here in Charlotte. It's good to be home! I'd love to know: Where do you call home?
Soulmates. ❤️ Whether you’re loving on other Soulmates. ❤️ Whether you’re loving on others or just yourself today, my little crew is wishing you a wonderful Valentine’s Day!
Good additions! Even though I'm all about simplify Good additions! Even though I'm all about simplifying life, I also like adding more good, if there's room for it. And the last year has given me ample opportunity to make some changes and add a lot of good. Here's my super-random list of things I've added to my life in the last year that I now love:
.
-Using oat milk as my milk of choice (it's literally the creamiest, and I can’t go back to others now)
-Choosing to be outside as much as possible (can't believe I stayed indoors so much before, never exploring the beautiful Bay Area and now Charlotte until the last year)
-Teaching and taking virtual fitness classes (I was a gym rat for years, and now I actually love to work out at home with my virtual fitness friends)
-Wearing my Apple watch for notifications so I don't always need to be on my phone and tracking some beneficial metrics (I've only had my watch for about 9 months, and I love to check my heart-rate and close my rings)
-Appreciating the ability to work for myself and giving myself friendlier deadlines (I've been my own boss for several years and used to be so strict with my deadlines, until I realized it was stressing me more than it needed to, so now I say no to a lot of things and only do what works well in my life, without adding too much unnecessary stress)
-Shorter workouts (full-hour workouts are a thing of the past for me)
-Wearing more colors (no more black uniforms every day)
-And more!
.
I wrote a whole post about this topic on A Lady Goes West this week if this is of interest to you, and you can head on over and check it out. I'd love to know: What's something (random or not) that you've added to your life in the last year that you now love?
Over the weekend, I stepped foot into a big-box gy Over the weekend, I stepped foot into a big-box gym for the first time in more than 11 months. How did I feel about it? Mixed ... When we left California, gyms were still closed, and once we got to North Carolina, I was so used to not going to the gym, I didn't even think about going. After being here a month, I finally decided to get a guest pass at a gym near me, and I went twice. Here are my thoughts on the experience:
.
At first, I felt so excited to drive up and go in and work out in a big space with a lot of equipment and not be at home. But then reality sank in: Even though masks were required and there were signs everywhere reminding people, about half the folks in the gym had their masks off or had them down around their chin. Ummm, not cool. I get it, working out with a mask on sucks, but rules are rules, folks. I also didn't like that it was busier than I expected, and quite a bit of the equipment I wanted to use was occupied. That never happens at home.
.
Overall, I'm glad that those who need to get to the gym are getting the opportunity, but right now, I think I'll go back to sweating safely at home for a little while longer. But at least I got my first locker-room selfie in almost a year. I'd love to know. Have you been back to the gym yet?
