Current faves: Our new house, new sneakers and workouts

February 19, 2021 By Ashley 6 Comments

Hello from our new house. It has been an action-packed last week as moved in!

Literally, I only sat down for a total of maybe 30 minutes each day the first two days when we were unpacking and trying to get all of the boxes emptied. The exhaustion was real. But, in the last week, we’ve got just about everything put away. We have a lot of work left to get the house fully set up, and we’re excited about the process.

Our new house by A Lady Goes West February 2021

Because of the madness of the move (and life in general — trying to work, be a mom, potty train and figure everything out in a new city), I missed getting a post up earlier this week (which you know is a rare occurrence). Sorry, folks. I’ll be totally honest and let you know I’ve been struggling over here managing things, which happens. But I’m glad to be back today. I’m working on something good for next week, so look out for that!

Now, let’s do some faves …

Current faves

Life

We’re in our new home in Charlotte!

Obviously, a favorite favorite of the week is our new house! It’s totally different from our California house, and has a lot of extra space for us. During the unpacking process, even though I was tired, I truly enjoyed finding that we had more than enough room for everything, which is a change from before. My favorite rooms of the house so far are the kitchen and the primary bedroom closet.

Over the last eight years of living in the Bay Area, including in two super-tiny city apartments, a townhouse and then a house, I never had a big closet. I shared with Dave everywhere except for our Pleasant Hill house. And there, our closets were so small, everything was smushed together. But not any longer. We have a huge walk-in closet, finally, and it’s a dream. I don’t plan to accumulate too much stuff just because I can, but I do plan to appreciate the space — having lived without it for many years. Getting the closet all situated called for a selfie …

As far as the work we need to do on the house: We’re planning to paint the interior of the house, add a fence behind the house (Rudy needs boundaries) and potentially paint some of the bathroom cabinets — all within the first few months. We also need to get a lot of furniture, because we don’t have nearly enough.

Funny story: Dave worked four full days off a desk set-up of cardboard moving boxes this week, and it made me think of Tim Gunn’s catchphrase on “Project Runway” — “make it work!” Amen! Nonetheless, after months of uncertainties … we are HOME!

Gear

New Reebok PRIDE sneakers

I hadn’t bought new workout sneakers in over a year. Wow! And that’s unlike me. One of the biggest things I used to tell my BODYATTACK participants (back when I taught live BODYATTACK classes every week — sob sob), is that you need to change out your sneakers much more frequently than you think to avoid wear-and-tear injuries — even when your sneakers look clean.

However, I basically stopped wearing sneakers to work out once I started working out on carpet at home, more than 11 months ago. Then, I wore my older sneakers for outdoor walks and hikes, so I never really felt like I needed new ones until recently.

I shopped all around and ended up with the most beautiful and comfy Reebok PRIDE shoes, shown below …

(Here are my leggings, and here are my shoes in a picture taken in the locker room after trying out a gym that I don’t plan to join. My thoughts on why in this Instagram post.)

These sneakers feel like you are walking on a cloud, yet they provide plenty of support at the same time. Although they are designed as a running shoe, they feel like they’d still be great for cross-training workouts too with some lateral traction.

I’ve worn these ones a couple times for circuit training indoors, and I love them so much. By the way, my last pair of long-lasting sneakers were Reebok as well, so I trust the brand with my feet.

Also, because I had been in old sneakers for walks for so long, the first time I put my feet in these, I let out a deep breath. Ahhhhh was the actual reaction.

These shoes were out of stock last week, but are available again here. And they will probably sell out again, but you can put your name on the list to be notified when they are back. There are some more solid patterns in this same style too, if that’s more your thing. These shoes are mostly true to size, but perhaps run just a touch big — which I think makes them even more comfortable.

Self-care Soirée invite

I’m hosting a virtual self-care party with some Beautycounter friends next Friday evening (February 26 at 7:30pm Eastern and 4:30pm Pacific), and I have a few spots left for some of you to come and join the virtual fun. If you’d like more information on the event (it’s super informal, and all you need to do is show up in your comfortables with your beverage of choice), send me a DM or email, and I’ll share the Zoom link. There will be giveaways! 🙂

Workouts

Weekly workouts

Here’s a look at my workouts from last week …

Weekly workouts by A Lady Goes West

  • Monday: 40-minute weights circuit at gym, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday: Taught 45-minute barre class on Motus, 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 30-minute weights workout via Peloton, 6 p.m.
  • Thursday: Taught 45-minute barre class on Motus, 3 p.m.
  • Friday: Rest day
  • Saturday: 10-minute yoga stretching via Peloton, 6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 20-minute POP Pilates, 11 a.m.

This past week was a lot lighter in the workout department, and I only picked up weights two times. I was physically exhausted during our move-in days, so didn’t expect much in the way of exercise, other than a yoga stretch at the end of one of the days just loosen up.

As I mentioned, I did a free trial of a gym here and was not a big fan of how crowded it was. I went twice, and don’t plan to go back. Here’s the short workout I did during that second visit to the gym …

Congratulations on your new house! The family pic is so cute! Good luck with the rest of the unpacking, etc, I was in your shoes just recently and understand how crazy it can be!
How was your week? School, work, chasing our two boys – it was a good and usual one!
What are you up to this weekend? Sat – out to lunch with the fam and friend, Sun church, catching up on stuff around the house

Hi Joanna! Reebok is a solid brand of shoes — you don’t see them in stores as much, so I think that’s why they may not be as popular, but I always love them. I’m so glad you are done with your move, and I’m glad we are done too — it really is so stressful. We hope to not move again for a long time. Have a wonderful weekend! I need to explore Waxhaw one day soon! 🙂

It is SO enlightening! Have you ever read The Woman Code? Or read that author’s blog? https://www.floliving.com/ She talks a lot about syncing with your cycle, and it’s amazing. I need to follow it more! 🙂 Anywho, have a great weekend, Sabrina! 🙂

Brady was all smiles for his first official day of Brady was all smiles for his first official day of preschool as a Charlotte resident (while wearing big-boy undies, BTW). And let's be honest, I was all smiles too. Although I love spending every waking second with this adorable curly haired boy, I also love some time to myself, so I can fit more work into the regular workday and maybe a workout too. Fun fact: Even though I'm an extrovert, over the last year, nothing seems to recharge me like some time alone to think and just be -- and that's not always easy to come by as a mom of a toddler during a year-long pandemic. What recharges you, friends? Hope you can get some of it this week.
G.I.V.E.A.W.A.Y! 🎉 Who gets excited for protein G.I.V.E.A.W.A.Y! 🎉 Who gets excited for protein powder like I do? I've tried so many protein powders over the years, and this is hands-down my favorite -- Organifi Complete Plant-Based Protein. It's 100 percent organic, has no soy, no whey, it's vegan, gluten free and dairy free, and each serving has 20 grams of plant-based protein. But the most important part: It tastes delicious mixed with nothing but water. I'm a fan of the chocolate flavor, but the vanilla is good too. I drink this protein powder several times a week, and I look forward to it after a tough workout. As a little thank-you for following, I'd love to give away one tub of @organifi protein to one lucky winner. And if you want to try out anything from Organifi in the future, my code, ALADYGOESWEST, gets you 15 percent off on the site, and I highly recommend the GOLD powder for a nightly relaxing treat too.

I've got to be honest, I'm much more of a writer t I've got to be honest, I'm much more of a writer than an Instagrammer and many times I feel like what I want to share doesn't fit well into a grid. But I'm able to bring much more long-form content to my blog each week. Speaking of that, this week, I debuted a new series called "A Lady Goes West Advice Corner" which has been something I've wanted to put together for a while. In this series, I'm taking totally anonymous questions from YOU and giving you some neutral third-party advice on it all. Here are the questions I addressed in the first advice corner edition:
.
-“I became a first-time mom last spring and am currently dealing with all things motherhood. How do I deal with my expectations vs. reality of being a mom?" (such a good one, and I've been there)
-“How do you deal with days when you don't love your body? I think we can all relate to looking in the mirror and being disappointed with what we see?" (this happens to us all)
-“How do you deal with comparing yourself to others on social media and not feeling like everyone is doing things better than you?" (spoiler alert: everyone has their issues that you don't see)
.
The answers are long, they come from my heart, and I hope they can provide some value to you! If this is something you're interested in, head over to A Lady Goes West today to check it out, and you can submit a question for the next edition.

HOME! We closed on and moved into our home in Char HOME! We closed on and moved into our home in Charlotte over the weekend, and we're so excited to get settled in our new neighborhood, city and state after many weeks of transition. In honor of this momentous occasion, I thought it would be fun to look back at the places Dave and I have lived together over the last 12 years. Here's what it has looked like -- and each place has been special for different reasons:
.
-2009-2012 in a high-rise condo in downtown Orlando, where we lived when we got married.
-2012-2013 in a one-bedroom apartment in South of Market in San Francisco, which was always freezing no matter the time of day or year.
-2013-2014 in a tiny studio apartment in Nob Hill in San Francisco, which was only 550-square-feet, but we could hear the cable cars out of our always-open windows, so that was cool.
-2014-2017 in a two-bedroom townhouse in Walnut Creek, where we brought home both Rudy and Brady and had many sleepless nights.
-2017-2021 in a house that we owned in Pleasant Hill outside of San Francisco, which was across the street from a Starbucks so we went there way too often.
.
And now we're here in Charlotte. It's good to be home! I'd love to know: Where do you call home?
Soulmates. ❤️ Whether you’re loving on other Soulmates. ❤️ Whether you’re loving on others or just yourself today, my little crew is wishing you a wonderful Valentine’s Day!
