A lovely Florida weekend and my weekly workout report

Welcome to a new week, my friends! And for those of you celebrating Thanksgiving this week, hopefully it’s a short few days of work for you with good plans on the horizon.

I’m pretty relaxed right now. I’ve been enjoying some leisure time hanging out with my parents in Florida since Wednesday evening of last week, and it’s been just what I needed. The days have been fairly similar, looking much like this: Sleep in until about 8 a.m. (which is 5 a.m. for my body still on West Coast time), work on the computer from the bed, have breakfast, take a long walk, go out for lunch with my Mom, hit up one to two stores for some shopping, come home, work on the computer, eat dinner, watch TV, go to sleep, and repeat it all over again.

And finally, thought you should see all of the options I had to choose from when getting a manicure the other day. I went with deep purple, and it’s okay.

So far the highlights of my visit have included a lunch with my dear friend Kristen, (whom I’ve known and been friends with since I was about eight years-old), as well as introducing Rudy to my parents, who are definitely enjoying his company. And the delicious and healthy meals I’ve been eating, combined with nightly desserts and wine, have been just the icing on the cake. A perfect balance, if you ask me.

Tasty meals from Florida visit via A Lady Goes WestI’ve enjoyed a great mixture of these home-cooked and chain-restaurant eats shown above over the past few days. I’ve already been to First Watch (veggie omelet), Panera (lentil and quinoa broth bowl) and even Applebee’s (cedar grilled salmon and potatoes) — finding great meals at all of them.

Getting hooked on podcasts

Rather than jumping into my full-fledged workouts, I’m taking it easy this break and just being sure to do some movement each day. Because I knew I planned to head out each day for a long walk, I decided to do a little research on podcasts and somehow stumbled on The Model Health Show by Shawn Stevenson. I had never listened to a podcast until last week and am totally hooked! Not only does Shawn have the best radio voice that I’ve ever heard, he also interviews super interesting guests about all topics related to health, wellness, fitness and life. I can’t believe how fast listening to this type of audio program makes the time pass. If you’ve got time on the treadmill, during your commute or walking your dog, I highly suggest you check out these free shows. I’ve finished three full hours so far and will be getting into another one today.

My weekly fitness and workout recap

Switching gears a bit, every Monday, to start the week off right, I like to take a look at my most recent week of workouts to stay accountable.

Weekly Workouts

  • Monday: Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
  • Tuesday: Took a 45-minute barre class at FlyBarre Walnut Creek
  • Wednesday: Rest and travel day
  • Thursday: Went on a 45-minute walk, did a 15-minute upper-body resistance band workout
  • Friday: Went on a 45-minute walk, did a 15-minute lower-body resistance band workout
  • Saturday: Went on a 45-minute walk, did a 15-minute upper-body resistance band workout
  • Sunday: Rest day

What was good about my week of workouts?

This past week was incredibly light for me compared to my usual line-up of fitness, but it did include some beneficial walking, resistance work, a barre class, as well as one high-intensity session with BODYATTACK. I’d say the best part about this past week of fitness has been walking. Now that I live outside the City, I don’t take as many steps as I used to and boy I’ve missed it. Simply putting one foot in front of the other in the open air is the best!

What could have been better about my week of workouts?

This past week didn’t include any real weight training, outside of some very short and simple resistance sessions, so I’m definitely in need of some heavier lifting. However, I had already planned for last week and this one to be a little bit lighter due to my travel. While I don’t want to be totally inactive, I’m not stressing myself to do hard-core workouts right now and putting most of my attention on enjoying my time in Florida.

That’s all I’ve got for you my friends! Have a great day! (P.S. Thanks to Meghan for hosting today’s “Week in Review” link-up.)

  1. I’ve never listened to a podcast, but that one seems right up my alley. Perhaps I will check it out soon.

Glad you’re enjoying your time down here in Florida!

  2. Yay for going back home 😀 You know I feel you on that love. I used to listen to novels and classics on my phone while marathon training, so I tend to like podcasts that do the same. And I like listening to crime stories–I find the psychology so interesting! Criminal is a great one.

  3. Sounds like a nice and relaxing trip! Love the pic of Rudy with the bow! At least you didn’t pick a pink one, so it’s kind of manly ;). I listen to podcasts all the time! My favorites are Girls Gone WOD, Girl Next Door, This American Life, Limetown…gosh so many more!!

  4. So glad you’re having a wonderful time! Spending time with family and relaxing is one of my favorite parts about the holidays 🙂 I notice you listen to a lot of podcasts…I never have but it sounds like a productive way to pass some time. I’ll have to start checking them out! <3

    1. Hi lady! Actually, this was my first time ever downloading and listening to a podcast! I love it!! 🙂 Definitely look into some. 🙂 AND YES for relaxing and family time!

  5. I like listening to Podcasts during my daily commute. My favorite used to be Serial (before the season ended) and now I’ve been listening to Criminal. I also like a few music related ones to keep me pumped up during workouts … one of my faves is Posh Podcast.

When I’m visiting my parents I’m all about switching up my workouts to include more walking and resistance band workouts. Bands are the only workout equipment I bring with me and I’m all about soaking up family time and not worrying so much about fitting in a typical workout.

This week I’m continuing on with the boot camp I’m taking part in for the next few weeks. It’s been nice to have my workouts planned for me 🙂

Enjoy your day in the heat …. we’re getting our first storm of the season!! Boooooo

    1. I’ve heard of Posh Podcast I think, so I’ll look into that one too. So glad you’re enjoying the boot camp, Catherine! Jess is great!! Happy Monday to you, lady!! Stay dry!

  6. Phew – inspiration to take it easy while I’m in Florida starting tomorrow. I’m already stressing because I haven’t completed my workout for today while I’m vacationing and this is a great reminder that it’s not the only important piece of my day. It’s about spending time with the ones I love… at Panera & nail salons. 🙂

    1. Hi Jessica! Don’t stress about your workouts!! You can jump right back into them after the holiday. And YES to Panera and Nail Salons hahaha. Of course. 🙂 Have a lovely night, lady!

  7. I seriously need to look into some podcasts, especially since it’s getting colder and a lot more of my runs/walks are going to have to be done on the treadmill for the next couple of months. Eep. I usually just listen to music or watch some kind of show, but even that gets old… and I totally agree that listening to someone talk about topics that you’re interested in makes the time go by so much more quickly!

    1. Hi Amanda! It sure does! It seems like there are a world of podcasts out there, so I’m sure you can find something that interests you. 🙂 Have a great night!

  8. I love podcasts! I’ve been listening to those everyday since listening to pandora can get old, ha! I like “stuff you should know.” You should check that one out!

    1. Hi Torry! Yes, rest is good! And some family walks are good ways to get those steps in. I’ve been trying to get some in with solo walks and family dog walks heheh! 🙂

  9. I was without internet this weekend so I spent the bulk of my weekend waiting for the repair tech who didn’t show up for the two separate appointments that were booked for us. Being an adult can be so boring! I’m glad you’re enjoying the sunshine state 🙂

  10. How are those broth bowls from Panera? I’ve seen them a bunch, and we go pretty often since it’s quick, easy and toddler friendly, but I have a problem with branching out. Panera was my first job when I was 16 and I may more or less still order the same thing……

  11. So many great podcasts to choose from nowadays! Hard to narrow down! My favorites lately are Fresh Air (great interviews), This American Life (great story telling), Reply All, and Hidden Brain. Check out the top podcasts on ITunes.

  12. I love that podcast! I’ve been listening to him since he started! You would love the Chalene Show with Chalene Johnson ( the piyo gal) and The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes! I’m a podcast junkie haha

    1. Oh cool, Audie! I don’t even know how I found the Model Health Show, but I’m so glad I did. And I listened to the episode where he had Chalene Johnson as I guest, and I enjoyed her too. Thanks for the suggestions!
