Life updates and pictures of everything I ate yesterday

Greetings from Florida, my friends! I’ve been enjoying some relaxing days at home with my parents for a whole week. Everything has been great, outside of the terrible haircut that I got yesterday. While I asked my stylist for a minor trim, during the cut, I looked down on the floor to see three-to-four inch chunks of hair lying on the ground, creating uneven layers around my head. And after that, I found out I was charged an extra $20 because the stylist used a flat-iron on my hair, which was never mentioned up front. Yup. Total rip-off. You can bet I left a negative Yelp review of that place. I’m really not picky about my hair at all, and typically just choose salons based on a deal, but I walked out of there super upset. It’s a good thing that ponytails and buns are my preferred ‘do, because that’s all my hair should be doing for the next couple of months.

Moving on to more positive news, my botched haircut, my Mom and I are picking up Dave from the airport today (and fitting in a lunch with one of my wonderful girlfriends, Judy!). And my brother and his girlfriend are driving down from Atlanta as well, so the group will be expanded throughout the weekend. I can’t wait for some family shenanigans! But today, we’re here to talk about food, so let’s get to it …

This week’s “What I Ate Wednesday” recap

In the middle of the week every week, I like to take a moment to share a full day of all of my meals in pictures, just to give you a glimpse into some of my food choices. Here we go …

What I Ate Wednesday via A Lady Goes

Today, I’m sharing everything that I ate yesterday, which was a day that included hanging out at home, shopping and little-to-no working out (in fact, all I did was a super-short walk and this 15-minute upper-body resistance band workout in my pajamas in the evening).

Un-pictured glass of orange juice at 7 a.m. enjoyed in bed (thanks, Mom!)

Breakfast at 8 a.m.

Florida eats - overnight oats and tea via A Lady Goes WestI’ve never actually made overnight oats at home in Florida, but my Mom had purchased all the fixings for me, so I felt the need to do it. This was the best combination ever, and I think I’ll have to share the recipe next week. Stay tuned! Served alongside some hot green tea and topped with a banana.

Lunch at 1:30 p.m.

Florida eats - First Watch avo toast via A Lady Goes WestTrue story: I had a protein bar in my bag when I was getting my hair done, but I decided to skip it in order to be really hungry for lunch a few hours later, which I was anticipating. My Mom and I went to First Watch, one of my favorite healthy day-time eateries (primarily located in the Southeast), and I had this impeccable avocado toast with two eggs … I die! I cleaned my plate in no time. Yum central. This will be recreated at home. People, get on the avo-toast train, NOW!

Snack at 5:30 p.m.

Florida eats - cottage cheese via A Lady Goes WestMy Mom always has these little cottage-cheese doubles in the house, and I don’t know why I don’t buy them at home in California too. I mean, they are quite the good snack. Protein, fruit, flavor, all in one convenient pre-packaged container.

Dinner at 8:30 p.m.

Florida eats - salmon dinner via A Lady Goes WestWhen I’m at home, I give my Mom a list of things I want to see on one plate, and she makes it happen. You see blackened salmon, a baked sweet potato and sautéed collard greens with artichokes. I could eat this every single day from here until the end of time, especially paired alongside two glasses of Chardonnay. Good stuff!

Dessert at 9 p.m.

Florida eats - dessert via A Lady Goes WestThis spread is all from Publix, my favorite Southeastern grocery store. It features a few slices of carrot cake and two types of ice cream — moose tracks and egg-nog flavored, of course. I’ve had this similar platter of dessert three nights in-a-row and finally finished off the cake last night. Time for a change tomorrow, and I see cheesecake in my future! I’ve been having dessert every night here (which I don’t always do during the week), and I’m loving it!

Questions of the day

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten lately?

Are you traveling for Thanksgiving this year?

  1. Bad hair cuts are always a blast, that’s why I have one stylist and know her well to not have any issues. I actually am going to see her on Friday. Yea for new dos.

    1. Hi Renee! That’s smart of you! Well since I was traveling, I tried a new place. Bad idea! I actually bounce around a few places in SF and am always pleased with the results though. Hope your ‘do turns out great! 🙂

  2. I can’t imagine you looking “botched” in any way, shape or form, no matter the haircut. But that’s a bummer for sure. Especially when you are overcharged. Good thing you had that spectacular avo toast to console you.

    Xoxo.

  3. Nooooooooooooooo. This is why I am so weird about getting my hair cut! I’m hoping that you can find someone who can fix the damage! But at least you got to have some Publix bakery cake–their cake is the best, period. I don’t think I’ve had their carrot cake, yet, though…. new life mission.

  4. Gosh, nothing I’ve eaten lately looks as good as that dinner and dessert! You have all my favorite things. Enjoy it all – savor the foo and the family!

PS – I put avocado on everything- including toast!

  5. Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear about your hair cut experience!! I would be really upset. I hope it grows out to a point where you like it soon 🙁 The plus side to that day is that it looks like you had some amazing food… I am traveling to my grandmother’s for Thanksgiving. We have a tradition of celebrating there each year. Hope you and your family have a wonderful day tomorrow!!

  6. That’s too bad about your hair & I can’t believe that they charged that much to flat iron it!! I’d be scared to see what they think of styling my hair … it takes my hairdresser 15 minutes to cut it and 1 1/2 hours to blow dry it and flat iron it because I have thick, curly hair!!

The best thing I’ve eaten lately is a butternut squash, cranberry, quinoa & spinach salad. I just bought the ingredients to make it again.

No Thanksgiving for this Canadian girl …. but I work for an American company so I’m looking forward to a less busy week since most of our co-workers and clients will be out of the office starting today at noon 😛

  7. Boo on the haircut. At least hair usually grows back!

I roasted some sweet potatoes the other day, and instead of just cinnamon I tossed them with some leftover homemade pumpkin spice blend. Pumpkin spice potatoes! It’s now a thing over here.

We’re staying home for the holidays this year. Have a great Thanksgiving with your family!

    1. Hi Emily! I have some pumpkin pie spice but have never put it on potatoes– great idea! Enjoy your Thanksgiving – must be nice to do it not in a city apartment, right? ?

    1. Ha, thanks! As an update, the cut looks even worse second day ahaha. But at least I’m in Florida having fun. Have a great Thanksgiving, lady! ?

  8. That looks like the BEST avocado toast ever. I’m so glad you’re enjoying such good food at home – your mom surely knows whats up! I love trying a little bit of everything on my dessert plate also! 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. $20 !!! To straighten your hair?! That is insane, you should speak to the manager about your experience and get a refund, seeing how your wishes were not followed at all! On the other hand, yay for avocado toast! I love a slice with a fried egg and Sriracha on top 🙂 and YAY for ALL the dessert, it is my favorite thing. Have a great Thanksgiving!

    1. I’ve never put Sriracha on anything, would you believe that? It’s quite the thing though — people love that sauce. And I wish I would have questioned the payment more, but oh well. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving as well, my friend!

  10. Oh that sucks when you get a bad haircut. I always go to my same stylist. I don’t trust anyone else with my hair. Too many bad experiences in the past.

I love avocado toast, it’s so delicious and with eggs, it’s heaven.

  11. Sorry about the haircut, that is the worst!! I had one bad experience in college and ever since then I’m picky about my hair stylist!! Have a fun thanksgiving though, I can’t wait to eat all day! Haha!

  12. Oh girl, you’re poor hair!! I have had a few and it always brings me back to the time my dad took me for a hair cut when I was 8, and I walked out with a full-on mullet. Not to mention all the BAD BAD blonde dye-jobs….so, I feel your pain. But it will grow out and blend together fast. xx

  13. Argh, sorry about the hair antics, Ash- If anyone can pull off the man-bun, it’s ….Rudy.

Anyway glad you’ve been eating well and FIRST WATCH!!! I went there last week and had some amazing pancakes. Avocado on toast sounds epic too and that with sea salt + red pepper flakes = my daily snack! Hope you have an epic Thanksgiving buddy!

    1. Hi Arman! Is this your first T-day in the U.S.? I hope you get to eat some turkey and good stuff!! Have a fabulous holiday. I’ll put Rudy’s hair in a man bun for you!

  14. Oh god, I’m crying over you awful hair cut story! I remember I went to a cheapo place when I was younger and wanted the Jennifer Aniston hair cut (Thanks Rachel Greene) and she cut it like a weird mullet (think the mom from the brady bunch) -it was terrible!!!!! Ugh I feel your pain…I actually drive 2 hours now to get my hair done because I don’t trust anyone else..yup I have issues!

This weeks eats haven’t been all that exciting, especially since we up in the North had our Thanksgiving last month! So jealous of everyone’s instagram accounts and delicious looking food! I’m slightly obsessed with Cliff bars right now and it has to stop….I eat them like a treat and they ARE not…lol I guess there are worse things to eat but a big calorie count for a bar….lol…I’m limiting myself to one a day..or so I say! lol

    1. I could definitely eat a Clif bar a day! They are so good. There are totally worse things to eat, but at least they aren’t as expensive as Quest bars. And I’m sorry to hear about your mullet many years ago ahhahah!! And yes, I remember you saying you drive far for your hair. I get it! Have a fabulous evening, lady! ?

  15. Have so much fun in Florida and happy early Thanksgiving! Ugh, I’m sorry to hear about your crappy hair cut. I hate when they turn out poorly, and unfortunately, that happens all too often.

Your lunch looks freaking INCREDIBLE. I love how you pile on the avocado.

  16. I had the most amazing hairdresser back home in Scotland that always cut my hair perfectly. Now I’m in Australia I have had to find a new hairdresser and have my first cut there next week – so incredibly nervous!!! And I have shorter hair so if it’s done badly I can’t hide it! Eeeek!
