Current faves: Happy June, Memorial Day weekend fun and workouts

Hello, my friends! It’s the first post of June, and that means we’re truly into summer. I’m looking forward to our upcoming roadtrip to Tennessee with our besties later this month. Until then, it’s business as usual.

How was your week? My week was pretty good, and it went by quickly, with Monday being a little bit of a holiday over here. This week, I taught my regular five classes, subbed an extra barbell class, worked, met a friend for an evening walk around the neighborhood, and Brady was at summer camp at his preschool during the mornings, which he really enjoyed. (Also, I made a little video about our month of May, so check it out here.)

This weekend, I’m getting a keratin treatment on my hair (my first one in almost a year, so hopefully it helps my frizz, and hopefully it doesn’t do any further damage to my sad little mane), going to a kid’s birthday party and enjoying a brunch with my lady friends, while preparing a new barbell workout for Monday on the side, and that’s about it.

Let’s get to the current faves of the week …

Fun

All the things we did over Memorial Day weekend 2022

Last weekend was so full of fun times, so I didn’t want to miss sharing it all on the blog.

On Friday evening, Dave and I went out to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We went to the RH Rooftop, which I had been to once before with friends. It’s an incredibly gorgeous setting on top of the Restoration Hardware store, and we enjoyed ourselves fully — reminiscing about our last 10 years of marriage and even what’s to come in the future. Want to know one thing we’re sure we want to do more of over the next 10 years? Travel!

(The jumpsuit I wore had been hanging in my closet for two years with tags on it. I bought it for a cancelled trip to Vegas in March 2020 and was waiting for the right time to pull it out. It’s not available any longer, but here’s a similar version from the same brand. And here are my trusty heels I’ve been wearing a lot lately.)

But a little bit about the RH Rooftop — outside of how cool the scene is, the prices are ridiculous, and we’ll only ever go back for a very special occasion. For our meal, we split some shrimp cocktail and a huge burger with fries, and it was all delicious and plenty for two people.

Fun fact: After we finished dinner at the RH Rooftop, we walked over to P.F. Chang’s and sat at the bar so I could get a big slice of cheesecake at a reasonable price. I enjoyed every bite of it.

The next day, we took Brady mini golfing for the first time at High Seas in Fort Mill, South Carolina (only about 10 minutes from us, because we’re close to the state line), and he had a blast.

(I”m wearing this basic white tee in a small, and here are my new denim shorts, which are high-waisted, and I’m in love. I’m wearing a size four in them, but I’m normally a size six in other brands.)

We had been talking about this for a while and finally made it happen. We didn’t really follow the rules or keep score during mini golf, but it was still a great activity for him. It was super hot, and there was no shade, but I’d definitely take him again. We plan to take him bowling next. And while I wouldn’t normally choose these weekend activities, it’s so cool to get to experience all these little firsts with him. He’s so into everything new.

We also went to the pool twice over the weekend, once just by ourselves for a late-afternoon swim and once with nearly all of our neighborhood friends for a big Memorial Day pool party. I know I say this all the time, but I’m so happy we have good friends and so many family friendly activities to keep us busy and entertained.

And finally, Dave came back to my barbell class on the holiday, which makes me very pleased. Next up, he needs to try my Shred class, because I have a feeling he’ll like that one a lot because it has cardio in it, and that’s his preferred form of exercise.

Other than all of the things reported above, I also went to tennis, took my car to the dealer for service and drove around a loaner for a few days, did some chores and work and we finally chose the stone for our kitchen project — yay! Three cheers for a very full and fun Memorial Day weekend, which was a little bit light on sleep and downtime, but was good for the soul.

I don’t have any other big faves to share, so we’ll stop there! 🙂

Workouts

My workouts from last week

Here’s where I share a recap of my previous week of workouts. I share this to show you how I try to get diversity in my week, and how I always take a rest day (almost always). But remember, I do a little bit more than the average person, because I’m a group fitness instructor.

Workouts from the week of 5/23

  • Monday: Taught 1-hour barbell class at Life Time, 9:45 a.m.
  • Tuesday: Taught 1-hour barre class with light weights at Life Time, 9:30 a.m., took 45-minute barre class with light weights at Life Time, 10:45 a.m.
  • Wednesday: Taught 45-minute barre class with light weights at Life Time, 9:30 a.m., taught 45-minute barre class with light weights at Life Time, 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Taught 45-minute combo class with weights at Life Time, 9:45 a.m.
  • Friday: Taught 45-minute barbell class at Life Time, 11:30 a.m.
  • Saturday: Took 45-minute hot yoga sculpt class at Life Time, 9 a.m.
  • Sunday: Took 90-minute tennis clinic, 11:30 a.m.

This past week was totally full of classes again. I taught six, took two and had a tennis lesson. I was happy to have fit in yoga and had a light day with nothing but tennis. I didn’t do any solo workouts again, but I did spend some time with foam rolling, dynamic warm-ups and recovery before and after my classes, so at least there’s that.

Best read of the week …

Here’s an article I read this week that I felt like sharing with you:

How to improve your gut health. Is your gut healthy? Are you regular? Do you have good digestion? If not, you may have some imbalances in your gut health. This is an excellent article on ways to support a healthy ecosystem in your gut, which is very important for your overall wellness. Eat more slowly, include more minimally processed foods in your diet and exercise are some of the tips you’ll find. Check out the full article here.

Cardio fitness. This is a common question, and I once wrote a whole blog post about it … “How much cardio should you be doing each week.
