Dinner date, dog date, group fitness and my weekly workouts

Hello there, my friends! I hope you had a great weekend! Mine went by far too fast, as they tend to do. A quick recap and my usual weekly workout recap ahead …

Scenes from the weekend via A Lady Goes West blogShopping, food, fitness and more fitness — that pretty much sums it up.

A look at my weekend in Walnut Creek

On Friday afternoon, after a meeting at Orangetheory, I popped into Lululemon and picked up an outfit for me and shorts for Dave, mostly covered using some gift cards we had both received. And yes, gift card shopping is the best kind of shopping.

In the evening, Dave and I went to dinner at The Cheesecake Factory in downtown Walnut Creek, which makes two chain restaurant visits in one week (perhaps a record for us since moving to California). That night, we had drinks, bread, appetizers and cheesecake, and it was glorious. Who needs entrees!

Dinner at The Cheesecake Factory by A Lady Goes WestThis was not my usual healthy meal. But boy it was good. You see tuna carpaccio with chips, assorted egg-rolls and a mound of cheesecake and ice cream. Yes, please.

On Saturday, Dave was up and out early to golf in a tournament, so I used my alone time to begin watching the latest Les Mills group fitness releases, which I will be teaching for the first time next week. I also ran out to Target and did some random errands and chores. I mean, pretty exciting stuff.

In the evening, Dave and I invited over another couple to watch the Warriors game and to most importantly let Rudy enjoy his first real date. Our friends Richard and Kellee brought over their three-month old pug, Lola, who is about five pounds and totally feisty.

Rudy meets Lola via A Lady Goes West blogThey didn’t take their eyes off each other the entire four hours, except for when they both passed out for a little nap. Rudy’s first date was very tiring.

Even though Rudy is nearly twice her size, Lola dominated him and chased him around all night. She would even grab onto his tale and pull chunks of white fluff off of it. So as you would imagine, in addition to enjoying some appetizers and wine that I put out, we spent the majority of the night laughing hysterically at our little dogs. Good times.

On Sunday, it was mostly all about fitness for me. I spent time learning some BODYPUMP tracks, joined in for a portion of a special Orangetheory workout and went to a BODYPUMP instructor practice session in Pleasanton. In the evening, Dave and I made dinner at home and prepared for the week ahead, and that’s the story.

My weekly fitness and workout recap

Every Monday, I like to share my recent workouts, so let’s get to it …

Weekly Workouts

  • Monday: Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
  • Tuesday: Took a one-hour Orangetheory class, foam rolling
  • Wednesday: Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, foam rolling
  • Thursday: Taught a 45-minute BODYPUMP and a 30-minute core class, foam rolling
  • Friday: Took a one-hour BODYFLOW class
  • Saturday: Practiced BODYPUMP for 25 minutes with light weights
  • Sunday: Did 25 minutes of HIIT at Orangetheory and 25 minutes of BODYPUMP, foam rolling

What was good about my week of workouts?

This past week included two cardio sessions during BODYATTACK and Orangetheory, as well as four resistance sessions during BODYPUMP and Orangetheory. I also took a fabulous BODYFLOW class, which is the Les Mills version featuring a Pilates/Tai Chi/Yoga combination, and it was nothing short of magnificent for both the body and mind. The best parts of my week in fitness were sprinting at 12 miles-per-hour in an Orangetheory class on the treadmill (so fast!), as well as stretching to the music during BODYFLOW. Power and recovery. That’s what it’s all about.

What could have been better about my workouts?

It’s pretty clear that this past week didn’t have a full rest day. While my Saturday was incredibly light, I still did a small amount of exercise in order to prepare for the instructor practice session I went to on Sunday. Overall, a day off would have rounded out the week, because I always make time for those (so should you!), so I hope to have one this week.

That’s that, folks! I hope you have a great start to your week! (P.S. Thanks to Meghan for hosting today’s “Week in Review” link-up.)

    1. Hi Megan! HA! He needs to stand up to her first. Let’s see what happens when she is full grown and bigger than him. Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

  1. You left out the most important piece of information- what flavour cheesecake did you guys order?? Looks delicious regardless! I was in bed & down with the flu from Thursday to Saturday so the best part of my weekend was undoubtedly getting an appetite back and leaving my room!! I had a friend’s birthday drinks on Saturday night so luckily I was able to attend :)!

  2. How cute that Rudy had his first date! Looks like you had a great weekend – good eats (I haven’t been to a Cheesecake Factory in so long!), time with friends, and working out. Sounds like perfection!

    1. Hi Becky! The wait for a table at the Factory is always super long, so we go for seats at the bar. Makes it much more doable. Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

    1. Hi Gretchen! She was SO little. Hard to imagine that Rudy was smaller than her when we got him! He looked so big compared to her. Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

  3. Happy Monday Pretty Lady! I hope the holidays were wonderful 🙂 Those two dogs are a sight to say the least, Rudy looks like a big strong man next to that little pug. Also, well done on the 12mph sprint! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, that OT heart monitor pushes you more than any other fitness class can! Goals for the month: another OT class! XOX

    1. The Orangetheory in the Financial District and the one in SoMa should be opening in a couple months I think! You better go check them out! Hope all is well with you, lady! 🙂

    1. The Lulu stuff is SO expensive. But luckily, I get a discount as a trainer, which helps a little! Hope you get the pants you want soon. And hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

    1. Honestly, I NEVER go in there unless I have a specific need for a gift or have gift cards. I try not to become addicted to Lulu stuff – it’s SO expensive. But boy, I’d love to have it all in my closet heheh! Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

  4. I love doing doggy playdates with my 2 year old retriever mix, Otto. It’s a great way to see friends and also have a tired pup by the end. I’ve noticed that’s it’s so easy to watch the dogs play the whole time instead of letting them play and and visiting with the other humans haha!

    1. Hi Anna! Yes, at first we could barely hold a conversation because we were so invested in watching them run around, but eventually we all hung out as well, but YES, totally understand what you mean. Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

  5. Absolutely adorable that Rudy had a playdate!

I taught the new Flow on Saturday and I adore this release.

Not in love with the new Pump. A-presses again?

    1. Hi Gen! I LOVE BODYFLOW and wish I had it in my life more often. Not sure which release I experienced this past week though. It wasn’t the new one, because we don’t do the new ones until Saturday at 24 Hour Fitness. And I’m not a fan of the A-Press at all either. I like the chest press or the chest fly. Not the A. Come on! heheheh 🙂

  6. I love doggy playdates, Paisley is such a spaz that she does better at doggydaycare……it was so cute when I’d pick her up and they’d give me a report card on who she played with. haha!

    1. Hi Marielle! Oh my gosh! I love that you get a recap of the day! Rudy has spent plenty of time with other dogs, but for some reason, this little puppy controlled him and scared him ahha!

  7. Pups are too cute! Rudy does look really big next to the pug, but cute and fluffy as well :). Sounds like a great weekend, and can’t wait to see what you scored at Lulu!

We have a welsh corgi and he’s so bummed we haven’t gone on a long walk in a week because it’s so cold.

    1. Hi Jessie! I bet he has cabin fever! Do you have a sweater for him? I keep wondering if it’s cold enough here to warrant a sweater for Rudy … but maybe not? Seems like other dogs around here are bare. 🙂

      1. Oh he loves the cold! He stays plenty warm, it’s me who gets cold. I was in double layers yesterday on our short walk and couldn’t feel my nose when we got home.

  8. Hi Ashley! Nice to see you had an eventful weekend. I took my first Body Pump class today, which I enjoyed. I have an 11 year old labrador who is extremely playful and loves getting her tummy rubbed!

    1. Hi Nikki! That is AWESOME news to hear you tried out BODYPUMP! I hope it was a great workout for you, and don’t be surprised if you’re pretty sore from all of the reps. I remember being sore for about three days after my first ever class. It was glorious! And my Rudy pup loves getting his tummy rubbed too. 🙂 So cute. Have a great day, lady!

  9. Oh my gosh, I forgot about Cheesecake Factory! That’s a chain Scott and I loved to eat at in Orlando. I misssssss it. I loved seeing the video of Rudy and his pug playmate over the weekend! Too cute. Have a great week, Ashley!

    1. Hi Heather! Our favorite chain in Orlando was totally Olive Garden but that Cheesecake at Milenia was quite nice. 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend, lady!

    1. Hi Giselle! Yup! Rudy is unsure of his friend, so we will have to do another meeting. 🙂 And yes low-key is good sometimes. Hope you had a nice weekend!

  10. I’m curious – do you get a workout when you teach or would you say 50% of what you’d get if you were taking the class? I always wonder this when I’m taking a class. Have a great week!

    1. Hi Ashley! Good question. When I am teaching at Orangetheory, I do NOT get a workout when I teach. When I teach Les Mills classes, I do the entire workout in front of the class, so yes, it’s totally a full workout for me. I’d say bootcamp classes — not so much. Does that make sense?

  11. Ohhh, I want to see what you got at Lululemon! I do love that store. I think their pants are some of the best I’ve ever owned. I have 2 pairs that are about 4 years old and just as good as they were on day one. Loved the video of Rudy with his friend. No pets for us. Maybe someday. Yay for BODYFLOW! I have training for it next month and I was lucky enough to get a copy of the release already and have started trying to learn it. So different from the other formats, it’s going to take me a little while to learn it. How was BP practice?

    1. Totally cool you are going to BODYFLOW training! I’d love to do that one day. And BP practice was good because it made me learn two tracks ahead of time, which we critiqued each other on.

  12. Oh my goodness, Lola is so adorable! Other people’s puppies are the best because you can play with them but you don’t have to deal with them full time. And you don’t have to deal with puppy teeth (which are the worst). You had such a busy week–hope you’re getting some rest this week! The best part of my weekend: getting stuff done! I always feel better when I’m able to cross a lot of things off my to-do list. Hope you have a great Monday, Ashley! 🙂

    1. Hi Beth, Yes, actually this little Lola had some sharp teeth and she kept biting us heheh! But it was funny! I totally need a rest this week, but have to debut some new class choreography, which will have me practicing a lot. Oh the life of an instructor. Hope all is well with you too, lady! 🙂

  13. Aw love puppy dates! Our dog Hank actually met his best dog friend through puppy training. They both flunked but his best friend, who’s also named Rudy’s owners became our super close friends, and those two dogs could play for HOURS!!

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the new BodyPump release today and WOW..it was a bit hard to keep up especially the back track but I LOVED IT!! Looks like you had an awesome weekend..

    1. Hi Fiona! That’s so cool you made friends through your dogs. Love it! And how funny they flunked doggie school. YES, the new PUMP is tough! I will start learning it soon for an early launch next week!
