Santa Cruz weekend getaway, catching up and my weekly workouts
Well hello there, friends. Happy Valentine’s Day week! Why don’t we catch up? A brief weekend recap, some news and my workouts coming your way! (And before we get started, did anyone see Ed Sheeran’s performance on the Grammys? He killed it!)
I’m happy to say that we finally had a break in the rain in Northern California this past weekend, and it was gorgeous out! On Saturday, Dave and I made the short road-trip down to Santa Cruz to go to a Santa Cruz Warriors basketball game and to visit his little sister, Gwena. (Remember when Gwena inspired me to write this post about the benefits of working out in the morning?) We brought Rudy with us too, and he enjoyed a little change of scenery and the sunshine.
Dave, Rudy and I got down to Santa Cruz around 3 p.m., and took a walk to the beach to enjoy the view and ocean air. From there, we went back to Gwena’s place and hung out before heading out for dinner and the game. We had some delicious Mediterranean appetizers at Mozaic in downtown Santa Cruz and then walked to the arena. By the way, the Santa Cruz Warriors are the D-League minor team of the Golden State Warriors, and Gwena works there (keeping it in the family). The arena is pretty small, but they put on a good game there. Because all of the seats are in the “lower bowl,” there isn’t a bad spot in the house to watch the action on court.
I loved all of the entertainment and fun in-game events that took place, which were totally different than what you would expect at a Golden State Warriors game. For instance, they had some little kids play musical chairs in a competition, and there was a dance group of tons of young people performing jazz. So cute! We had a great time supporting the Santa Cruz Warriors and loved checking out Gwena’s beachy pad, as well.
In the morning on Sunday, we went to breakfast with Gwena at Lulu Carpenter’s in downtown (where I got the delicious green tea latte you see below), before hitting the road back to the Bay Area, where we did all the Sunday things. I’m so happy to have the beautiful sunshine back!
Rudy turns two years old
And in other news, if you are reading this post on Monday, February 13, it’s Rudy’s second birthday. While we didn’t meet our furry bundle of joy until he was 12-weeks-old, it’s nice to know the actual day he entered the world. If his birthday had fallen on a weekend, I totally would have had a party for him. But nobody wants to party on a Monday, you know? Rudy will be enjoying a special doggie treat and extra snuggles (if that’s possible) today. Happy birthday, buddy! We love you!
My weekly workout recap
It’s been a minute since I’ve shared how I’ve been moving, so let’s do it. I worked from home nearly all week, so you’ll notice my workouts were at different times than usual.
Weekly Workouts
- Monday: Took a 45-minute BODYPUMP class, 4 p.m.
- Tuesday: Took at one-hour barre class, 10 a.m.
- Wednesday: Did a one-hour weights session with a trainer, 9 a.m.
- Thursday: Taught a one-hour Bootybarre class, 6 p.m.
- Friday: Did a 30-minute full-body weights workout, 15 minutes of yoga, 10 a.m.
- Saturday: Rest day
- Sunday: Did a 20-minute full-body TRX workout, 4 p.m.
Overview of the week
While I’ve been going strong for quite some time with one yoga session a week, I didn’t get to a full class this past week and only popped into one for 15 minutes before my gym time needed to be done for the day (things to do!). I did, however, lift weights three times, which was awesome. I’m working off of a small five-pack of personal training sessions and have totally enjoyed the extra push in the gym with my trainer friend, Will, who is a fellow Les Mills instructor too. This past week was heavy on weights, but I did get some flexibility and cardio training in with the two barre classes, as well as a nice full rest day over the weekend. It was an okay week overall, but I missed a full yoga sesh.

Questions of the day
How was your weekend?
Do you ever miss a certain style of working out when you don’t do it for a while?
Do you celebrate your pet’s birthday?
How is Rudy 2? We celebrate our pets’ birthdays… ish. We always make a note of them, but we don’t go ham and get them presents. Though we did when I was a kid. Ridley would destroy whatever it was anyway, lol!
Yes, no presents today, but he will get a special doggie treat. heheh:) Hope your weekend was good, Susie!
Oh my gosh- it’s been 2 years already?! Happy Birthday Rudy!
I know! Time flies! Thank you from Rudy. 🙂 Happy Monday, Heather!
Sounds like a fun weekend! I have a love-hate relationship with spin…I miss the feeling of completing a tough class when I haven’t gone for a while, but not necessarily the class itself 🙂
Hi Nicole! I feel you! I would say I feel good after spin, but that’s the one workout I don’t really like to do. Funny enough, I’m planning to do it today! 🙂 Have a great Monday, lady!
Happy Birthday Rudy!! We do acknowledge dog birthdays 🙂 with treats and such.
Glad you had a good weekend!
I love it! Good! Glad we aren’t alone! Rudy will be getting a special treat later. Have a wonderful day, Julie! 🙂
I was stuck with cold all last week so I did lots of yoga and a little strength training and I missed having a few cardio days. Cardio and a runny nose I learned do not mix well as you spend the entire time needing tissues, lol. But our weather is surprisingly supposed to be pretty nice this coming weekend so I’m hoping to do a long run outside. And Happy Birthday to Rudy! I love spoiling pets a little extra on their special day =)
Hi Patricia, yes I don’t blame you for skipping the cardio with a runny nose. I hope you are all the way better soon, friend! Have a fab Monday! 🙂
Happy Birthday Rudy!!
The sun is shining here too and it’s lovely. Oscar has been sleeping in the sun patches and I can’t say that I blame him.
Enjoy the beautiful weather, Meghan!! 🙂
I’m a runner…or maybe just a quick jogger. But when I lived in New York I took group yoga classes. Sometimes I miss that group feel and the chill factor I get after the last stretch. Also, I totally celebrate my dog’s birthday. With three kids and a husband, I’m careful not to “Lady and the Tramp” her and forget about her!
Hi Jamie! Thanks for saying hi! And that’s so sweet you celebrate for your pup with your fam too. And I agree that I LOVE the last stretch of a good yoga session. When else can we lay in darkness and soak up the silence? 🙂 Have a great day, lady!
That latte is too gorgeous! I’ve been craving a big ‘ole foamy one so I’ll have to find time to treat myself. I definitely notice my body “craving” certain types of workouts. Lately I’ve been really into kickboxing and also loving my leg days (although my sore legs…not so much 😉 ). Hope you have an awesome week!
xxMeah
Hi Meah! It’s funny, but so true, that our body will tell us when it wants to do something. Hope you’ve been listening to yours:) Have a great day, lady!
Aww happy birthday, Rudy! 😀 I’ve been missing more intense HIIT workouts but I know once baby comes, those fun sweatfests will be back in my life 😀
Hi Heather! You’ll have time to get back to HIIT! And I mean, it’s hard hahah, so enjoy your more relaxed and safe sweat sessions for now, lady!
Glad you had a good time in our town. Santa Cruz was stunning this weekend with the gorgeous sunshine . I have never gone to a game at our arena as I cannot be in crowds but we all support them and love that the organization gives support to local children and schools as well. Kudos to the Warriors !
Next time your in town try Hoffman’s, its a beautiful romantic restaurant that has live jazz with dinner and its a short walk to the arena. . Happy Birthday to Rudy ! Molly was rescued so I don’t know her real Birthday but I celebrate her “adopt a versy” every year which is her new Birthday . Have a great week.
Hi Laura! Oh my gosh, the weather in Santa Cruz was absolute perfection! 🙂 Thank you for that! And yes, the Santa Cruz Warriors seem to have a great relationship with the local community, and I love that. We will definitely be back down soon, so thanks for the recommendation for Hoffman’s. Have a great night, lady!
I really want to get into barre classes! I have tried them in the past and they’re so hard (but in a good way!)
Hi Christen! Thanks for stopping by and saying hi! I think the great thing about barre classes is that almost anyone can do them — because it’s low impact, yet at the same time, you get a great BURN! Hopefully when you get the chance to get back into barre you find a good class, where you have options and can go as hard as you want, or pull back if you need to! 🙂
