The best black leggings I’ve been wearing that are less than $100
We’re talking about the best black leggings today! And rarely do I devote a whole post to a piece of clothing, so you know these are good and worth sharing with you.
I spend most of my time in activewear, and I’ve tried a lot of brands of activewear over the years. I try to choose quality pieces that last, and when I find something, I often buy multiple versions of it. As a group fitness instructor who puts activewear to the test, I need leggings that stay put during tough workouts.
Throughout the last two years, my favorite black leggings (you know, the black ones that you wear the most out of all your other ones) have been the Invigorate style from Lululemon. But Lululemon has moved that style to the final sale area, so I’m guessing they will likely stop making them. I’ve loved wearing mostly Lululemon for these last couple of years, but I knew I was ready for a change, so I decided to branch out with these …
Recently, a fellow instructor at Life Time was singing the praises of the brand Vuori to me so I decided to order a bunch of things and try them out. I already shared about that first initial order in a current faves post, but now that we’re a month out, it’s time to share my absolute number-one favorite item I ordered: the best black leggings! They’re getting a whole post. And if you feel like trying these out, thanks for shopping from my affiliate links below. 🙂
The best black leggings I’ve been wearing that are less than $100
The Vuori Daily Pocket Legging is the best black legging I’ve had in a very long time. These black leggings are priced at $98 (and you get 20 percent off your first Vuori order, if you sign up with your email address).
These leggings are high-waisted, but not super high-waisted, so they fall just a bit below my belly button, and I’m 5’8″. They have a tie detail in the front on the waistband, and they have a jogger-like band at the bottom of the leg-hole, both of which I love. These elements make them a little special, and I’ve received a ton of compliments on them so far in the last month of wearing them several times a week. They don’t look like every other pair of leggings out there.
But what I like the best about these leggings is the flattering fit. While they technically are not really a compression fabric, they feel like they hold me in comfortably. I feel good in them. And I don’t feel that way in all leggings, you know? These are supportive, but light, comfy, but fitted.
Sizing of the best black leggings
I’ve been asked if the Daily Pocket Legging runs true to size, and I think the answer is … no, they run slightly big. But just slightly.
Here’s the deal: I usually wear a size 6 for a snug fit in Lululemon, and I almost always wear a medium in other brands. But in Vuori, I’m a small. I ordered (and kept) both the small and medium in the Daily Pocket Legging, and I like both. I fit in both well, but of course, the smalls are a bit more tight. For reference, I’m 5’8″ and 145 pounds or so (haven’t weighed myself since the last time I went to the doctor, so I don’t really know). I probably prefer the fit of the small though. (As a note: The sizing tool on the Vuori website wasn’t helpful for me. It told me to order a large, which would definitely have been too big.)
The Daily Pocket Legging comes in sizes XS to XL, so there’s a decent range to choose from. My instructor friend told me that over time, you may feel a tiny bit of give in the leggings, which is why I got a small and a medium to see which holds up better for me.
Because Vuori has free returns (and free shipping on any order over $75), it probably doesn’t hurt to order two sizes, if you’re unsure about what’s best for you. That’s what I did, and I decided to keep them both, so now I have two sizes of the same legging, and I like that.
Fabric and fit of the best black leggings
The Daily Pocket Legging is made from a breathable and sweat-wicking stretchy fabric, and as a big-time sweater, I can assure you they hold up to some moisture, and don’t show any sweat. They are soft to the touch too, which I love.
The fabric is polyester and elastane, if you care for specifics. And it’s definitely supportive, without being compressive, and it’s thin, so they feel light. Also, they are 7/8 length, which is usually pretty flattering on everyone.
If you like the look of these leggings but aren’t into pockets (then my question for you is: why?), there is also a Daily Legging without pockets, and it’s $9 cheaper. I haven’t tried it, but I’m assuming the fit is the same as the Daily Pocket Legging. The non-pocket version comes in more sizes and more colors too.
Details on the Vuori Daily Pocket Legging
Here are some fast facts on the best black leggings …
- $98 (in the U.S.)
- Appropriate for leisure or tough workouts (I’ve worn them for both)
- Cuffed ankle, so they sort’ve look like a jogger at the bottom
- Drawstring feature, with a no-slip waistband, which makes them super cute
- Made from stretchy polyester and elastane for support
- High-waisted, but not super high-waisted
- Features small pockets (they are quite small, but I can just about fit my phone in them)
- Available in 6 different colors, I only have black but will get more
- Available in sizes XS to XL
- 7/8 length (my favorite length for a pair of leggings)
Other things I’m loving from Vuori
I’ve only placed one big order from Vuori so far, but I know I will get more. I’ve been loving everything I got, in addition to the Daily Pocket Legging. Here are the other items I’ve been wearing …
- Elevation Plyo Tank (size small, I bought the grey camo and black, and I’m wearing the camo in the pictures in this post)
- Short Sleeve Halo Top (size medium, because this one is short, in grey)
- Performance Jogger Long (size small, in grey)
- Daily Bra (size medium, in black, and I’m wearing it in the pictures in this post)
Next up, I’m going to get another color of the Daily Pocket Legging, and I’m going to get a pair of the Clean Elevation Legging, and maybe another Elevation Plyo Tank. The prices are really reasonable, and I get a discount as a fitness professional too, so it’s not as big of a splurge as Lululemon.
Closing thoughts on the best black leggings
I try a lot of different brands of activewear, and although I find plenty of cute pieces, these black leggings have stood out as my favorite in the last few years for their function and fit. I couldn’t miss a chance to share my love of them with you, friend to friend.

Questions of the day for you
Have you ever tried anything from Vuori?
Which brand are your favorite leggings from?
I’ve been curious about vuori, to be honest, but I tend to not really like ordering things when I have no idea how they’ll fit (especially since I am so short that with just under a 23″ inseam, many 7/8 leggings fit on me almost like I am wearing flippers…). I noticed that my local Nordstrom also sells the brand so I might try on whatever color they have in what I think my size is and then decide if I want Nordstrom points or a discount on the vuori website (Nordy anniversary sale isn’t too far away!!!).
For teaching RPM, SPRINT, and BODYPUMP, I am also a *huge* fan of the invigorates from lululemon. I’ve noticed many of the colors (of all inseams–even the 23″ which I guess are technically cropped length but are full-on leggings on me!!!) are in the sale section, but I have also noticed that the Wunder WT with pockets looks almost the same as the invigorates? I have no clue…I just look maybe TOO closely at everything I see!
I’m excited that the vuori leggings have held up well for your teaching–I know that instructors get SO sweaty, so leggings that can handle it all, that move with the body as we feel pretty heated, and that wash well are super important! 🙂
Hi Stephanie! Yes, before these leggings, the Invigorate were my only REAL go-tos for super-big workouts. I love that these Vuori ones feel a little lighter than the Invigorate, yet still stay up. I’ve tried the Wunder Under Train, and they are good — not AS good as the Invigorate though. I love that you are so into the specifics and look closely at items before you buy them — so important! Let me know if you try any Vuori! Have a great week. 🙂
I have been wanting to try this brand. I teach group fitness classes and own my own studio. How do you sign up for the fitness professional discount?
Hi Lauren! It’s a GREAT discount (up to 40 percent off). Apply here to get your discount: https://bit.ly/3mjC0MH. 🙂
