My current favorite workout clothes that I always wear to teach classes

My current favorite workout clothes coming at you!

Before we get started, let’s talk about the importance of workout wear. It matters. If you have the right well-fitted gear, you will feel better in your workouts. And if you’re comfortable with the form and function of your gear, it will help you to focus on the exercises at hand, instead of focusing on what you’re wearing.

If you’re working out at home and don’t feel like your workout clothes need to be anything special, I disagree. You don’t have to match, but you better be wearing supportive sneakers, a good sports bra and sweat-wicking material and not some ratty old cotton band t-shirt that makes you feel super hot and flops all over the place when you move. You hear me?

Invest in properly fitted workout attire to support your workouts. You deserve it. You need it. It just feels differently when you wear it. End rant.

Anywho, last week in my reader questions post, I touched on the topic of workout clothes, but I wanted to dive in a little more with this one. I wrote a full post about my workout clothes about two years ago, but I’m wearing different stuff now, so it’s definitely time to update.

I buy most of my workout clothes from Carbon38 and Lululemon, and I don’t mind investing in quality pieces that will last.

And although I have a closet full of workout clothes, I often choose the same few pieces over and over again because they’re my top choices. That’s what I’m talking about today — those favorite staple pieces. (And to any of my class members who are reading this post, how fun would it be to twin in these items together? Shop away.) 🙂

Here we go …

1. My favorite sports bra: the Action 2.0 Sports Bra in Cloud Compression from Carbon38.

I have this sports bra in three colors, and it’s the best!

It’s supportive, it has removable pads (that don’t move around too much, which is a big pet peeve of mine), it holds its shape, and it looks cute. This sports bra holds up for workouts with jumping, but it isn’t so tight that it’s uncomfortable to get on and off.

I think this bra would work for a small- to medium-chested gal, but I’m not sure about how it would work for a large-chested gal, because I don’t have experience in that department.

This bra comes in multiple sizes and colors, and here’s the description from the website:

The Action Bra 2.0 in Cloud Compression from Carbon38 is a medium impact sports bra featuring wide straps that join at a racerback with a cutout. A taut underbust band offers support while removable cups deliver optional shape. Made from our signature Cloud Compression fabric that’s sculpting and soft to the touch.

I wear a small in this, and it’s a great fit. I haven’t liked a sports bra as much as I like this one in years, which is why I have it in three colors and wear it many times a week. So good! Find the Action 2.0 Sports Bra in Cloud Compression here.

2. My favorite leggings: the Invigorate High-Rise Tight from Lululemon.

I have these leggings in camo and in green, and I love them so much. These are my go-to leggings for teaching Barbell Strength or Shred, because they stay in place like no other.

They are very compressive, but you can still breathe. They are high-waisted, but not super high, they have pockets, and they are 25 inches on the inseam, which I prefer, so a bit of ankle shows.

Here’s the description from the website:

Focus on your strength, not your sweat. Powered by Everlux™, our fastest drying fabric, the highly breathable Invigorate collection handles heat and sweat during intense workouts.

I wear a size six in these, and they are quite tight, but that’s how I like them. I would definitely recommend these leggings as super quality and great for high-intensity workouts. Find the Invigorate High-Rise Tight here.

3. My favorite sneakers: the Reebok Nano X2 Women’s Training Shoe.

Okay, my friends, you’ve heard me talk about these shoes so many times. But still, I get questions about my favorite sneakers, so here we are again.

I was wearing the Reebok Nano X1 for a couple of years, but I recently upgraded to the Reebok Nano X2, and they are even better.

These are a flat shoe, designed for cross-training, weightlifting or combination classes, like I often do. You have lateral support, and you will be able to feel the ground better than a rounded or shaped running shoe. I wouldn’t wear these cross-training sneakers for running, but you can wear them for cardio in a studio.

Here’s the description from the website:

From pistol squats to burpees, there’s no shortage of moves to take your workout to the next level. Reach for these women’s Reebok shoes to stay confident on your feet. They have a Flexweave® woven upper that’s breathable and durable, with integrated support for stable movement in every direction. The rubber outsole with a strategic lug pattern gives you secure traction.

These shoes run a bit large, so I’d say size down by half, most likely. Find the Reebok Nano X2 Women’s Training Shoe here.

(Also, if you haven’t read it yet, check out this one I wrote about how to find the perfect athletic shoe for your workout.)

4. My favorite workout tank: the Athlete Crop Seamless Workout Tank from Sweaty Betty.

I branched out with this tank top, when I placed an order with Sweaty Betty a few months ago, and I got two leggings and two tanks, and this tank is my favorite item — definitely worth adding to my favorite workout clothes list.

It’s super light, it has the perfect racerback that covers my sports bra (including the Action 2.0 sports bra above, which I always wear with this), and the tank hits right at the waist-band of my high-waisted legging.

I like the cropped look, but would rather not have too much tummy exposed while standing on the stage in front of hundreds of people a week, you know?

Here’s the description from the website:

A new and improved version of our bestselling cropped workout top. Fabric is lightweight and sweat-wicking, now with added stretch. Seamless design with breathable mesh panels. Slim fit with round neck and racerback.

This tank fits true to size, and I’m wearing a small. And I’m going to order it in a few other colors. Find the Athlete Crop Seamless Workout Tank here.

5. My other current favorite leggings: the High-Rise 7/8 Legging in Cloud Compression from Carbon38.

These leggings can be worn for any type of workout. While they are compressive, they are not as compressive as the Lululemon ones I mentioned earlier, yet they definitely stay in place.

These may be even more flattering though. They have a soft buttery feel, and I’ve told many people about these leggings. When I slide them on, I feel really good — like they fit exactly as they’re supposed to, and not all leggings do that.

I like the version with the pockets too, because this style is so good. This legging comes in plenty of solid colors, and of course, it actually goes with the sports bra mentioned above, so you can coordinate. I have this legging in four colors currently and am due for another color. And it’s very high waisted, which is how I like it.

Here’s the description from the brand:

The Carbon38 High Rise 7/8 Legging in Cloud Compression features slightly cropped legs with a sculpting double-faced waistband. Cut from our signature Cloud Compression performance fabric for a tight fit and soft-to-the-touch feel.

I wear a medium in this legging, and they fit true to size. Find the High-Rise 7/8 Legging in Cloud Compression here.

Those are my top five! And I’m wearing #1, #4 and #5 in this picture below. 🙂

  1. Thanks for the info. Really want to try the lululemon leggings. What socks do you wear? I have a hard time finding socks that look good when ankles show?
