My weekend and my weekly workout recap

Hello! How was your weekend, friends? Mine was good. But of course, a little too short.

True adult story: On Friday night, (a night in which I used to either teach a fun and full group fitness class in the city or hit up happy hour with friends), I sat on the tile floor, half-way inside a closet, digging through documents so I could compile our tax information. Yes, that’s what I did. Dave was working at a basketball game, and I didn’t get home until about 7 p.m., so I figured I would make use of my free time. It took me a while to get what I needed put together, and now we’re ready to meet with an accountant. How fun, right? After I got all the tax stuff together, I made myself a super-boring dinner consisting of two eggs, two veggie burgers and a kale salad, then I ate ice cream while watching “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” At one point, as I spooned the frozen delight into my mouth and listened to annoying voices on the TV, I thought — really — is this what my life has come to? But no, it isn’t. I’m plenty social all the time, and there are just some nights that aren’t as fabulous. Oh well. But nonetheless, no pictures to show for my Friday night activities.

The rest of the weekend picked up quite a bit starting Saturday morning. Dave’s parents came up to visit us for the night (they live in San Diego and were en route to a little vacation in Northern California), and we hung out for the day, cruising around downtown Walnut Creek.

Kara's Cupcakes and Tender GreensJust how I like it: A super-healthy tuna niçoise salad for lunch, followed by two mini cupcakes — one chocolate and one carrot cake. These little nibbles were both good, but the carrot cake one was to-die-for. I want to go back for the full-sized ASAP.

We had an absolutely delicious lunch at Tender Greens, and during that stop, I ran into the talented and sweet Alyssa and Carla, who were also getting their greens in. After lunch, we popped into some stores and then had some treats at Kara’s Cupcakes. It was such a gorgeous day to walk around, and Dave’s parents were very impressed with our new ‘hood.

Later that night, we all went to the Warriors basketball game, which was super exciting for Dave, because he was there as a “fan” and not working for the first time ever. Of course, the Warriors won, and we had a great time seeing the team play. (I did some serious people-watching and especially enjoyed the half-time performance, as hundreds of men and women did a Jazzercise routine on the court.) Good times.

Dave’s parents had to head out Sunday mid-morning to begin their vacation, and it worked out well, because both Dave and I had plans as well. Dave went golfing with a friend, and I headed to the group fitness studio for a three-hour practice session with other instructors.

Les Mills practice sessionIt was only a small group of instructors who showed up for the BODYATTACK portion, and we worked up a killer sweat in no time. After that, it was time to grab some equipment for a packed BODYPUMP practice.

I’m no stranger to spending weekend days in the gym, so I didn’t mind that I missed out on the sunshine outdoors. It was a worthy use of my weekend time. We worked on learning some of the new BODYPUMP and BODYATTACK moves and techniques in the latest releases, which at 24 Hour Fitness, we will begin debuting on April 5. It was definitely a good time to visit with some of my fellow Bay Area instructors, who I only see every once in a while at events like this. After that, I hit up the grocery store and went home to veg.

On Sunday night, Dave made us a delicious meal on the grill and we watched some “House of Cards.” And that was that! It was a relaxing and nice weekend, full of good food, family visitors, some work and some play.

  • Monday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
  • Tuesday –Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, foam rolling
  • Wednesday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
  • Thursday – Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, foam rolling
  • Friday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, attended a one-hour yoga class
  • Saturday –  Rest day
  • Sunday – Practiced 30 minutes of BODYPUMP and 30 minutes of BODYATTACK with a group of instructors to prepare for next launch

What was good about my week of workouts?

Well this was a Les Mills group fitness week if I’ve ever seen one. I taught five classes, all of which served as my workout for that day. I also attended a yoga class and a practice session for instructors. I did four sessions of cardio (all of which were BODYATTACK) and three sessions of resistance (all of which were BODYPUMP). That’s a good balance of both formats. I finally got in three strength-training sessions this past week, as I had been only completing two recently and hoping for more. Overall, this past week was a a good one, which even had a rest day and a yoga class for stretching and relaxation. 

What could have been better about my week of workouts?

Although I did plenty of workouts this past week, it’s ideal to have at least a session that is done alone outside of the group fitness room. I like to focus my individual workouts on single-side weight-lifting, because that counteracts all the barbell work I do while teaching BODYPUMP, which has me using both sides of the body at the same time. I always suggest that people take time to work each side on its own, to make sure that you don’t let your stronger side pull all the weight and develop great imbalances. Therefore, other than that one solo session, this past week was strong, and I felt great.

  1. Well I would say you had a good weekend! Lots of exercise in there, and ugh, yes tax stuff is not fun! I am loving going to my strength coach right now, and I am so proud my glute bridges are now up to 195lbs 🙂

  2. The musical that I was in happened this weekend…6 performances in 4 days. I’m exhausted and not ready for work! Lately, I’ve been loving power clean + press. It’s a move that used to intimidate me, but we do it all the time in my group power class, so now I love it! Have a great week 🙂

  3. Low-key nights at home are the best! I went to a bachelorette party on Saturday, we attempted a pole dancing class… not many of us succeeded haha. We also went and looked at new apartments, found one we LOVE, so excited for some more space :).

  4. Sounds like you had a good weekend! It does suck to be an adult sometimes, and have to deal with adult things like taxes. But good for you for being so productive! AND for giving yourself some well deserved down time. It’s all about balance.

  5. Hahaha I love your Friday night! I have nights like that too on Friday and think am I lame? And then I realize – nope! Just cause it is Friday doesn’t mean you have to go out. Especially when every night during the week you were going out. Friday is just another night.

  6. Some of those chill Friday evenings at home are totally nice sometimes. In fact, I kind of love them these days more often than I’d like to admit. 😉 My favorite kind of workout lately has probably been teaching RPM! BodyPump will always be my first love, but RPM has felt really good since being pregnant while BodyPump has been a little harder for me. Glad you were able to have a relaxing and productive weekend!!

  7. I love your workout recaps and how you highlight the best and what you could have done better! It seems like it helps or would help so much with progress looking at the whole week and trying to adjust each week based on what you need to work on!

  8. It think sometimes low-key Friday nights are the best. You don’t always need to be super busy and social right 🙂
    My favorite lift is the deadlift, but I also like overhead squats. The last one targets the legs and the core at the same time. Have a great Monday!

  9. Walnut Creek was one of my old stomping grounds a few years ago before we moved to Colorado. You hit all my favorite spots! Tender Greens and Kara’s Cupcakes… yum-O. I’m new to your blog and I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying WC.

    1. Hi Marnie! How awesome! Yes, I’m LOVING Walnut Creek. It’s beautiful and so much more laid back than living in downtown San Francisco of course. I really like the downtown and of course, the gyms. I hope you like life in Colorado. The Bay Area must be a hard place to leave!

      1. Yes, the Bay Area is a hard place to leave. I miss it every once in a while, but I feel like the tradeoff has been worth it.

        Plus, I still have my family in the Bay Area, so I go to visit all the time.

  11. This weekend was mostly filled with walking and cleaning…because we all know cleaning can be considered an exercise hehe. I wish my weekend was more eventful as yours but I guess some weekends are more laid back than others. Hmm best workout ive done lately was a run and hike by my neighbourhood. The sun was shining and it was one of those ‘perfect’ feeling days

  12. Ooooh taxes – The joys of adulthood 😉 We finished our a few weeks ago but owed so we just paid ’em over the weekend. Thankfully, we won’t have state taxes to worry about next year! Those mini cupcakes are the cutest and it is bringing my chocolate craving back to life, LOL. Have a great rest of your Monday, Ashley!

  13. You know Melissa! She was an instructor here before she became your GXM (I am assuming?). Fun! I don’t know her that well b/c we never taught at the same locations back to back, but I’ve heard she’s great! Yay for LM practices!

    1. Hi Annette, Yes, Melissa is the AGXM over San Francisco and she was there helping our practice session yesterday. She’s awesome! Teaches a ton of programs and is an LM trainer too!

  14. That is such a good point about doing other strength workouts besides just barbell work in Body Pump! For awhile that was the only weight training I did, and I never thought about how I could overuse my dominant side. Thanks for pointing that out!

    1. Hi Lisa! Yes, it’s a common problem for people, so I always suggest some single-side work. Sometimes BODYPUMP does that when we use the plates on their own, which I really enjoy. Glad to have taught you something heheh! 🙂 Happy Monday!

  15. I love Body Pump! I moved a few years ago and no fitness clubs offer Les Mills classes where I currently live. 🙁 My husband and I went on a long hike this weekend which was a great workout!
