Current faves: Quarantine week 22, Educated, new lip products and workouts
Hello, my friends! How are you? I hope you’ve had a great week!
This week was super busy for me. I’m still preparing and filming workouts for the project I’m working on, and I will share all the details with you soon. In addition to that, I taught a couple virtual classes, had several meetings, took Brady to the park, rode the Peloton and worked on the blog too.
This weekend will be full of more work, much like the last one. But I see a break on the horizon, because I should have everything done just in time for us to go on a little road-trip to Tahoe in two weeks, where we’re renting a house for a few days. Yay for a change of scenery and a little time off.

Now let’s get to the faves for today …

Books
“Educated” by Tara Westover
This book, “Educated” by Tara Westover, is super popular, and I had seen the name circulating for the last year or so and knew I should give it a try.
I was on the waiting list for it at the library for a long time and finally got it in my hands a couple weeks ago. Well, I read it SO quickly … I’m talking more than 300 pages in about five nights. I stayed up until almost midnight four nights in a row reading, because I couldn’t put it down, which is something I never do.
It’s a memoir, and it’s a true account from one woman about her life growing up in the rural mountains of Idaho with an incredibly strange family dynamic. I don’t want to spoil much, but it was hard to read at times. You know that some people grow up with bad situations, but this was really bad. Her father was always preparing for the end of the world stock-piling supplies, and he didn’t even want his kids going to school.
And yet, Westover came out on top and ended up going to college and becoming a “New York Times” Bestseller with her first book.
(“Educated” by Tara Westover.)
It was definitely a gripping story that pulled you in. If it had been fiction, I would have said it’s not super believable. But, it’s the truth, so that makes it even more riveting.
After I finished “Educated,” I looked up the reviews, and apparently this book won a ton of awards and was even recommended by Former President Obama and Bill Gates to name a couple. Clearly it had an impact on a lot of people.
If you’re in the mood for an intense real-life memoir from someone who has lived a tough life, but somehow struggled their way out, then this one is for you. But beware, it may pull you in and have you reading for longer periods than you initially planned.

Our new-and-improved lip products
We have a lot of awesome new products coming out in the next few weeks, and this week marked the launch of two new-and-improved lip products.
And I’m always a fan of wearing a lip. It just puts me in a good mood, even if I’m wearing workout clothes. In fact, I was inspired by the decked-out Peloton instructors to start wearing lipstick when I teach my virtual classes a few months ago — love it.
Here are the two products:
- Beyond Gloss Lipgloss — shiny, not sticky, with color
- Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick — balmy, hydrating, with color
These products are designed to look good, feel good and do good. Beautycounter spent 2.5 years finding a responsibly sourced vanilla scent for these products, which is a huge deal in the cosmetics industry, and Allure magazine wrote this amazing article all about the ethically sourced vanilla in Beyond Gloss this week.
(I’m wearing Amber Shimmer Beyond Gloss in this picture.)
These two products are replacing the old lipgloss and sheer lipstick. And there are a ton of new shades, new packaging and a new responsibly sourced vanilla scent to all of them.
- Beyond Gloss Lipgloss is a multi-dimensional shine, which isn’t sticky. There are 9 totally new shades, with 14 shades total. I’ve been wearing Amber Shimmer. And the other most popular shades are Magnolia Shimmer (cool, shimmer), Spice (warm, neutral), Clove (no shimmer and more coverage) and Rosewood (the most popular ever and very neutral).
- Sheer Genius Conditioning Lipstick is a hybrid lip balm with conditioner and color. There is 1 totally new shade, with 10 shades total. I’ve been wearing Rosewood, which is the most popular shade, but Twig, Rose and Plum are also beautiful. Actually, they are all beautiful. You really can’t go wrong.
Thank you to all of you who support my Beautycounter business!
If you have questions about any of the makeup or skincare, please let me know. I’d love to help you choose the perfect products.

Questions of the day
How was your week?
Have you tried anything new lately?
Did you have a favorite workout this week?
Hi Ashley,
I loved reading the seasonal eating article you linked in your post. We have been eating a lot of melons lately, honeydew especially, and they have been super tasty since they are in season! The “Be Here Now” quote from your calm app was much needed today, it’s been a busy week, and now I’m ready to get back to the present moment and slow down a bit. I hope you have a great weekend!
Hi! When you think about it, the seasonal eating thing makes total sense — a local and fresh melon is the TASTIEST! So glad you enjoyed that one. Hope you have a great weekend, and I hope you enjoy “Being here now.”
Hi Ashley! I’m 13 weeks postpartum and exercise has really been helping to get me out of a slump – not to mention, it’s my only ME time! I’d love to have some new leggings to motivate me! xo
Hi Katie! For sure, when your little one is that young, there’s not much alone time that happens. I hope you are taking it NICE and easy with your postpartum exercise routine, lady! Slow and steady and minimal impact. 🙂 Thanks for saying hi!!
Hey Ashley!
This was a great week for my workouts, too. I fit in Attack, Pump, Balance, CX, and Barre! Shorter workouts really help, and being realistic with my time. If I can only fit in 15 minutes, well, that’s okay!
I loved Educated! Its amazing how many of those siblings grew up to be so highly educated despite their family’s opposition to it.
Anyways, I’m a small in leggings! Would love to be in the running!
Nicole
Hello, my friend! Short workouts are WHERE it’s at, and look at you with all that diversity in your week all from Les Mills On Demand. I LOVE it. And Educated was so good … it’s still in my mind a week later! Happy Friday, my friend!
Happy Friday!
I’ll try and rack my brain for other Educated-like memoirs I’ve enjoyed over the years!
Hi Ashley! I’m a size small in leggings and have been in the market for a shiny pair! Thank you!
Hi Anita! Thanks for saying hi! Hope you’re hanging in there during quarantine, and hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
Hi Ashley!
Thanks for the positive recap, as always. I have Educated on my Kindle – need to prioritize reading it!
I’d love a pair of new shiny leggings – thanks for the opportunity to win!
You are welcome, Kate. Thank YOU for saying hi and for reading! Have a great weekend! 🙂
If you liked Educated, you should also read The Sound of Gravel – it’s also a memoir about radical Mormonism and it was incredibly gripping as well, and I think I enjoyed it more than Educated even though both books are excellent! Hope you have a great weekend!
Ohhhh my, that does sound interesting! Thank you for the book recommendation, Emily! 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend!
Hi there! I just picked up Educated from our library, I love books that pull you in quick! Our family did a new to us hike which turned out to be great. We move at a slower pace with the kids but it allows us to take in the beautiful surroundings.
Hi Lesley! Yessss, I can imagine hiking with kids is a slower process — we’ve seen as much with Brady. But sometimes kids do make us slow down and enjoy the journey a little more. Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
I’d like the chance to win a pair of shiny black leggings! I’ve been on a waitlist for Educated for months and can’t wait to start reading. So many people recommend it, so glad to see you’re giving it rave reviews as well.
Hi Liz! I think I waited for several months to get a copy, and it’s worth the wait. Hope you have a great weekend, and thanks for saying hi! 🙂
Hi I’m new to les mills about 1 month now and loving it! all due to stumbling on your blog and getting the free 30 day trial. Could you possibly do a post on your favorite releases especially for body pump and grit? also do you do the same one for a few times or choose a different one each time?
I am also a size small and would love some shiny leggings
Thanks for saying hi, Mary-Elsye!
That’s an awesome question, and I can definitely do a post like that. I’d say do each release 2 times in a row them move on, so you can get the moves and vibe! 🙂
I loved Educated-it’s honestly so hard to believe it’s a true story!
And I would love a pair of small leggings!
I know! I love a true story. Now I’m on the hunt for more. Thanks for saying hi, Amy! 🙂
