My low-key weekend and my weekly workouts

Happy Monday! Back to it! I hope your weekend was great, my friends! Mine wasn’t the most exciting couple-of-days, but that’s okay. Let’s do a quick recap and then get to the fitness.

A comfortable Friday evening on the couch

On Friday afternoon, I got my hair done, hit up the grocery store and then went home to fold laundry and do a few chores. By the time all that was complete, it was 7 p.m., so Dave and I elected to stay home. I picked up a couple of things at Safeway to make a sampler-platter for dinner. I put on my pajamas, poured a glass of wine and planted myself on the couch with Dave and little Rudy for the evening.

Nibbly picnic spread on Friday nightThis is what I like to call a “nibbly picnic,” consisting of a tuna sushi roll, shrimp and avocado rolls, hummus with veggies and chips, all served on my nice platter, of course.

Outside of going to the fridge to get dessert, I really didn’t move. We also finished the final episode of season 3 of “Orange is the New Black,” and I must say, the season totally picked up and pulled me back in, after starting out very slow. I can’t wait for the next season!

An unexciting Saturday with a fun dinner out

On Saturday, I did a little workout at home, worked on the computer for several hours and went on an unsuccessful attempt to purchase a bathing suit. The day was a bit of a bummer, but it picked up in the evening when Dave got home from golfing. We got all cleaned up and went to Va De Vi in downtown Walnut Creek for dinner, a place we’ve enjoyed once before.

Dinner at Va de Vi in Walnut CreekThe delights shown above include a Spanish red-wine flight (all mine), a cheese plate with my favorite Humbolt Fog cheese and walnut bread, a charcuterie mixed-meat plate with pate, a tasty salad and tuna tartar with sesame chips. Now that’s a good meal.

We sat at the bar, and I saw not one, but three people that I know from various gyms, including a fellow instructor and two members. The food was great, the conversation was great, and it was the best part of the weekend for sure.

A tasty lunch, shopping and more couch time on Sunday

On Sunday morning, after making a mess with a smoothie bowl, I pulled out and tried on nearly all of my outfits for our Hawaii trip. At this point, I’m basically all packed.

Packed suitcase via A Lady Goes WestIt doesn’t matter how full I stuff this thing, I somehow always manage to stay under that 50-pound limit. It’s quite amazing. Hawaii, here I come!

After packing, Dave and I went to downtown Walnut Creek and had a very delicious couple of salads for lunch at Lettuce, a place which we hadn’t been before and totally enjoyed. From there we shopped. Dave got some work clothes at Banana Republic using our “Friends and Family” discount (they are having a great sale on top of that, so check it out!), and I got some random bathing-suit bottoms from H&M. Apparently all the good swimsuits are sold out in all the stores, so I won’t be sporting a new suit in Hawaii after all. Instead, I got two new cheapy bathing-suit bottoms, which I plan to mix and match with my existing tops. It’ll have to do, I guess.

After shopping, we swung by Lunardi’s for salmon and steak, which Dave grilled up for our dinner. And that was the weekend. I wouldn’t say it was the best one ever, but I see some serious fun in my future with our vacation beginning later this week.

My weekly fitness and workouts recap

Each Monday, I like to give you a glimpse at my most recent week of workouts. So here we go …

Weekly Workouts

  • Monday: Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, did a 15-minute yoga session
  • Tuesday: Took a one-hour Orangetheory Fitness class
  • Wednesday: Took a one-hour Orangetheory Fitness class
  • Thursday: Taught a 45-minute BODYPUMP and a 30-minute core class, foam rolling
  • Friday: Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, did a 20-minute gentle yoga class
  • Saturday: Did a 30-minute CXWORX workout and a 30-minute yoga session at home
  • Sunday: Rest day

What was good about my week of workouts?

This past week, I had some excellent workouts. I had two full hours of high-intensity cardio training when teaching BODYATTACK, as well as cardio during a portion of the two Orangetheory classes I took. I picked up weights three times with BODYPUMP and portions of two Orangetheory classes, and I also did three yoga sessions. Once again, my highlight of the week was hitting another personal best sprint during an Orangetheory session.

What could have been better about my week of workouts?

I’d say this past week was pretty good. It would have been nice to add another resistance-training session, but overall I’m pleased. And my workouts will look much different the next two weeks with my pending Hawaii trip, as well.

That’s the report for now! My Monday is a usual one. I’m teaching at Orangetheory in the morning and then teaching BODYATTACK later tonight. Have a great day!

  1. Oh the joys of bathing suit shopping….

Sorry you didn’t find anything. I’ve become the queen of mixing and matching bathing suits now and it’s actually quite fun. Matching is overrated.

Your weekend eats sure look yummy though so at least there was that! Happy Monday!

    1. Hi Courtney, I know — when all else fails, as long as there is good food and wine in the picture, I am okay. 🙂 And three cheers for mixing swimsuits — mine are going to be totally unmatching. Happy Monday!

    1. Hi Megan! I know, I’ve never really loved buying bathing suits, and waiting until the end of the season was not a great idea. Oh well! Happy Monday, lady! I hope you’re having a good day so far! 🙂

    1. Hi Heather! I always pack a couple-of-days early, but this is by far my earliest. Can you tell I’m excited? hahah! Happy Monday! Yay for low-key weekends when we need them!

  2. Sounds like a perfect low-key weekend! Sometimes you need one of those, especially when you have something big coming up like Hawaii 🙂

I had a very busy weekend, including a race, helping my parents paint and going to a movie in the park. Hope this week flies by for you!

    1. Thanks, Becky! Yes, now that I’m living outside the City in Walnut Creek, I find that I run into gym people much more often! It’s fun to see people in their normal clothes. 🙂 Happy Monday! Hope you had a nice weekend!

  3. Ah I am so jealous of your upcoming trip to Hawaii… it is going to be beyond fabulous! I will totally be living vicariously through you 🙂 And that Friday night dinner at home looks better than eating out a restaurant ! I love it 🙂 Hope you have a great Monday!!

    1. Hi Jamie! Fancy platter dinners eaten from the comfort of our couch in pajamas — makes a good combination, right? I will be posting tons of Hawaii pictures, don’t you worry! Happy Monday, lady! Hope you had a nice weekend!

  4. Snacki dinners are the best. This time last year I ordered a great bathing suit online from JC Penny (yes, of all places). It was clearanced for seasonal reasons and under $15. End of season is so hit or miss.

    1. Hi Kristen! Good to know! I waited too late to order anything online this year, unfortunately, but I will keep that in mind for the future. Or maybe I should order one for next year now? hahahah! JC Penny definitely has some cute stuff — especially their designer lines, like the Nicole Miller, etc. Thanks for the reminder! Hope you had a nice weekend.

  5. Sounds like a nice low-key weekend 🙂 Love the hat! I have a similar one, but lighter colored.
We went to St Louis over the weekend, several of my boyfriends, friends were in from all over the place (SFO, Toronto, etc), so we went out to eat a lot, and went out for drinks at a cool place in downtown. I’m so tired now though, yay for being home :). I’ve found that swimsuits start coming out early in the year and are basically gone by mid-summer. They put them out in time for early spring break 🙂 . Oh well, usually I only wear the one I like the most anyways.

    1. Hi Jessie! I know, I should have looked for a swimsuit sooner, but oh well. And sounds like you had a fun one in St. Louis with your peeps! Too bad it’s over. 🙁 hahhah Happy Monday, friend!

  6. Well done on the low key weekend Ashley! I had one like this too, despite all intentions to be productive, thanks to a cold! But we need it sometimes 🙂 Friday’s are always a toughie – excited for the weekend but so drained from the week! I can’t wait to hear all about your Hawaiian vacation – it’s going to be amazing!

  7. Bummer you weren’t able to find a new swimsuit! I’m sure you’ll totally rock the ones you already have and those new swimsuit bottoms you found at H&M. I’m sure your Hawaii vacation will easily make up for the low key weekend you had! Excited for you!

    1. Hi Dani! Hhahaa yes, it was on the smaller side of our nibbly picnics for sure, and was followed by dessert not shown of course. Always fun to eat from a platter of varied things. Hope you had a nice weekend! 🙂

    1. Hi Heather, Believe it or not those fancy chopsticks were Dave’s well before we even got married. Pretty cool, huh? hahah! Happy Monday, lady!

  8. I can’t wait to hear about your trip!! So fun! I’m a dork and always pack for trips like a week in advance, ha. This weekend was pretty low-key for us which was nice after being out of town!

    1. Hi Marielle! That’s smart to pack early. I think this is the earliest I ever packed, and it feels good to have it done! Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂

  9. That platter literally encompasses my reason of existence on a plate. Just kidding, but all of those eats like very yummy! H&M has the cutest bathing suits now, do you like the high waisted trend?

    1. Ha! Niki! Hilarious comment. Yes, it’s a good platter of all sorts of tasty stuff. And I like the high-waisted suits, but I didn’t see any. I just go regular bikini bottoms. Nothing too exciting! Hope you had a great weekend! 🙂

  10. Ahhh love having some weekends like that 🙂 As much fun as it is to have a lot of plans on weekends, sometimes I finish those ones more exhausted than anything haha. So exciting about your trip!! Hope you enjoy the next few days of anticipation and that the last-minute preparations are smooth.

    1. Hi Jacklyn! Thanks so much! The trip is getting closer, and I cannot wait! I agree, that low-key weekends are good sometimes. I hope you have a great week, and thanks so much for saying hi! 🙂

  11. What a fun weekend and sounds pretty busy to me but for you I’m sure it was nice to not have real plans ! Love your vacation hat! I had a similar one for our cruise but it got smushed on the plane back 🙁 tried so hard to wear it and kept its shape for as long as possible ! Thank goodness for a kids size head so I’m on the look out for another one 😉 weekend was low key with a friend’s birthday BBQ and dinner at my parents ! Plus sunny weather which always helps put yah in a good mood !

    1. Hi Fiona! Nice weather is certainly a mood booster! I’m so glad you had a good weekend. And yes, I hope to keep this hat safe, but it seems like I never have a beach hat last more than one trip ahahh!

  12. I have been trying to go to BodyPump more often because I really enjoy it and I lift at home a lot, but BodyPump kicks my butt! I thought you would find it amusing that after after BodyPump class today I was making zoodles in my veggetti and it was so painful because my arms were so sore, I had to stop several times, lol.
