A chill weekend and my weekly workouts

Happy Monday, my friends! How are you? I hope the past couple of days have been good in your neck of the woods. Let’s get to a quick weekend recap and my weekly workout report …

Friday evening team outing in Walnut Creek

On Friday evening, Dave arrived home quite tired from a work trip to Napa, so he was happy to lay on the couch for a quiet night. After having some take-out sushi from Lunardi’s for dinner with him, I actually changed into normal clothes and went out on the town to hang out with some Orangetheory Fitness coworkers for a little team outing. We went to Masses in Walnut Creek, which is a pool hall I had driven by many times before and never actually noticed. I didn’t stay out late, because I had to wake up early to teach in the morning, but at least I went for a bit. It was good to see some of my fellow coaches and OTF staff outside of the studio.

Lunardi's sushi at home via A Lady Goes WestThis was our first time getting sushi from Lunardi’s, and I found it comparable to my beloved Whole Foods sushi. Dave didn’t think so though. Seaweed salad and a brown rice salmon/avocado roll for me.

Saturday morning sweat session and afternoon chores

On Saturday morning, I was up and ready to teach BODYPUMP in an 8 a.m. class. Dave had agreed to come with me earlier in the week, and he stuck by his word and popped up shortly before we had to leave. Class was great, but because there were nearly 55 people, we ended up running out of clips for the barbells, so some people used only plates, which is not ideal. Dave did a fabulous job keeping up during the workout, and it was good to have him there sweating away. After class, we went to Safeway and picked up our groceries for the week, went home and did some random chores. We also rode our bikes to DSW and Dick’s Sporting Goods for a mini-shopping trip later in the afternoon.

Post BODYPUMP pic via A Lady Goes WestI’m not really sure what happened in this picture, but I think it’s funny. Maybe we were delirious from the super hot and sweaty class.

Saturday evening dinner at Sasa Walnut Creek

On Saturday evening, Dave and I returned to one of our favorites in downtown Walnut Creek, Sasa. We didn’t have a reservation, but were able to snag two seats at the bar. We enjoyed some cocktails and tasty shared food. After dinner, we watched TV, had some pumpkin fudge and called it a night nice and early.

Sunday fun-day in San Jose at a soccer game

On Sunday morning, I caught up on some emails and work at home all the way until lunch-time, at which time, Dave and I suited up and headed down to San Jose for my first ever Major League Soccer game. We were there with some of Dave’s coworkers in an awesome outdoor/indoor suite just above the field to watch the San Jose Earthquakes play against a team from Utah. Good times were had by all, especially because the Earthquakes won, and the weather was beautiful. On the way home, Dave and I decided we were feeling pizza for dinner, so we grabbed a deep-dish pie from Zachary’s, which was not only spectacular, but was also the perfect way to end the day. And that was the weekend.

My recent weekly fitness and workouts recap

To start the week off right, I always like to take a look at my most recent week of workouts. Here we go …

Weekly Workouts

  • Monday: Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
  • Tuesday: Took a 45-minute barre class at Yoga Treat
  • Wednesday: Took a one-hour yoga session and a one-hour barre class
  • Thursday: Taught a 45-minute BODYPUMP and a 30-minute core class, foam rolling
  • Friday: Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class and took a one-hour barre/TRX class
  • Saturday: Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class
  • Sunday: Rest day

What was good about my week of workouts?

This past week was full of variety for me, which is always good in my book. I taught several classes and took several as well. I did two sessions of cardio (BODYATTACK), two long sessions of resistance (BODYPUMP), as well as some barre work, TRX work and a full hour of yoga. The highlight of this week of workouts was the flow yoga class I took at Yoga Treat (which I will be telling you more about soon in a full review). I felt great all week long fitness-wise.

What could have been better about my week of workouts?

This past week of workouts had plenty of variety, but didn’t feature a third heavier resistance session like I had hoped. But that’s okay, I know I’ll be getting in four this week. This past week also didn’t feature very much foam rolling, because I was in a rush before and after nearly every single workout I did. I’ll be sure to spend more time with my RumbleRoller this week!

And that’s it for today, folks. Today is a typical Monday for me — coaching at Orangetheory Fitness in the morning, working on the computer middle of the day and teaching BODYATTACK at night. See you tomorrow! By the way, if you missed it, I’ve got a sneaky little giveaway going, which closes tonight.

  1. Great going with your workouts, Ashley- you seem to have gotten a great mix in! My best workout was actually my lower body workout this morning. It definitely left my legs shaking and was the perfect start to (hopefully) a killer week of workouts :D!

  2. I’ve never been to a professional soccer game, but I’ve heard they can be pretty crazy from the spectator side. I have been to my share of pro baseball and college football games though, so I’m sure it’s probably along the same level of crazy fans : )

  3. Looks like another fun weekend! I love that picture of you and Dave after the workout..hilarious! This weekend was really fun..best part was going for a hike and it was gorgeous out! Finally fall temps in PA! Oh, and I love those sunglasses. CUTE!

  4. Hearing you mention that you didn’t foam roll this week reminds me that I didn’t either – whoops!!! Guess I need to remember to give me foam roller some love this week πŸ˜›

Our weekend was pretty low-key and exactly what we needed after being on the go all summer long!

    1. Low-key is sometimes very much needed, Catherine. And yes, you should hop back on your roller this week too ehhehe! πŸ™‚ Happy Monday! Here’s to a great week!

  5. Fun weekend! Wow, I can’t believe there were 55 people in your class! You’re a popular one Ashley! πŸ˜‰ I finally got Class Pass and have been doing morning classes on weekends to compliment my gym routine – barely anyone rolls out of bed for those ones!

Glad to hear you enjoyed the Earthquakes game, I only just heard of this team last week when someone offered my bf tickets – next week I’ll say yes!

    1. Hi Jill! Yes, you should check out the Earthquakes — The stadium where they play is super new and modern. And that’s awesome you’re trying new classes with ClassPass! I really enjoyed that service. What’s been your favorite so far?? Happy Monday!!

    1. Hi Emily! Barre workouts are a little bit of both. Not a lot of jumping – it’s all low-impact. You spend time at a ballet barre and will do a lot of TINY isometric movements, pulses and holds. A lot of work for the legs and butt, in the plie move and on your toes as well. There is sometimes the addition of 2-pound handweights for little pulsing arm exercises as well. I really enjoy the BURN of barre. And it’s good on the joints. You should totally give it a try! πŸ™‚

  6. Mmmm, so much yummy food you enjoyed over the weekend! I love goat cheese and know I would have LOVED that salad too πŸ™‚ I used to live in NorCal too and miss it so much! Especially because my brother was a sous chef in Napa and loved my visits there <3 Hope you have a great week!! P.S. I found that Chia sweet peach drink from naked juice, yum!

    1. Hi lady! You had a brother who worked at a restaurant in Napa? That must have been amazing! As you know, the food in the Bay Area cannot be beat. Where in NorCal did you live? Hope you had a nice weekend! Yay for the Chia juice! πŸ™‚

      1. He sure did! Not sure if you’re familiar with the Restaurant at Meadow in St. Helena, but he was the Sous Chef there for about 6 years πŸ™‚ He lives an hour from me now which is awesome, we love getting together to cook! My hubby is from Yuba City (north of Sac) so we moved there for a few years, miss it so much but it’s nice to be closer to my family now πŸ™‚ Hope you’re having a nice Monday!

  7. Sounds like a great week! I love BodyPump and would love to become an instructor one day when I have more time to teach (ie: when my daughters leave for college/university). It’s a long way off, but what was the certification process like?

PS – thanks for linking up!

    1. Hi Janice! Yes, teaching BODYPUMP is awesome. I’ve been through several Les Mills (the company that produces BODYPUMP) trainings and they are all pretty intense. It’s a weekend of ALL DAY training (2 days), in which you present tracks, learn technique and coaching, go through a physical challenge and then await a rating at the end. After you leave the training, you have to submit a video of yourself teaching a full class to get your certification. You should definitely look into it in the future! So rewarding!

  8. The rumble roller! That thing looks horrible and awesome all at the same time… much like most foam rolling exercises feel. πŸ˜‰ It looks like you guys had a great weekend! I love that Dave took class with you. I always love when Scott pops into mine. Have a great week!

    1. Hi Heather! I love my RumbleRoller, but it sure causes some pain heheh. And yes, Dave finally joined my gym, so he will be popping in when he can — although he is working during most of my classes. It was good to have him there. I hope you guys had a great weekend! πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Mar! That’s awesome that you try to go to BODYPUMP twice a week! You definitely see results faster when you can go more than once a week, so keep it up! Hope you had a nice weekend! πŸ™‚

  9. I have really been enjoying spinning again. It also gives my leg time to heal from running. I think that riding bikes to go on a mini shopping spree is romantic. You two are so perfect together. Thanks for sharing
    bakingrunner.blogspot.com

    1. Hahaha, well thanks, Heather! And yes, spinning is a great low-impact way to get in your cardio. Hope you had a wonderful weekend as well, lady!! πŸ™‚

  10. Were your seats really that close to the field? As a full blown soccer fan, I can honestly say I am JEALOUS! I hope the experience was a fun one for you!
Are the leggings you are wearing in that post body pump picture Lululemon? They are so cute! I can’t justify paying $100 for workout gear. I just play too rough in mine – they wont last long!

  11. Hi Ashley!
Love that you had an excuse for casual wear this weekend (and that salad looks delish.) My CX initial was this weekend (passed!) so I spent my weekend in workout gear like usual.

  12. Coming from the linkup πŸ™‚ Looks like a great week. Bodypump and BodyAttack sound like great classes. I haven’t belonged to a gym for almost a decade so I do all my workouts at home. I do miss classes though still. Have a great week.

    1. Hi Christy! Happy Monday to you! And you can get a great workout in at home as well, but I do enjoy the energy of the group setting. Thanks for saying hi! Here’s to a great week! πŸ™‚

  13. I had a great race on Saturday which was a perfect way to break up my marathon training. I’ve never been to a professional soccer game but it seems so fun! I’ll have to add that to my must-do list in NYC!

  14. It’s so fun when the guys tag along to fitness classes with us πŸ™‚ Although that is crazy you had so many people at 8am on a weekend morning! We didn’t do anything crazy over the weekend… Bowling with friends on Friday night, BODYPUMP on Saturday morning (then relaxing all day), and enjoying our COOL house on Sunday, ha.

  15. Oh I would love a local barre class! And your salad looked delicious, I can see why it was the highlight of the meal!
I am so excited that my husband finally set up a home gym in our garage. We now have weights as well as cardio equipment so I can work out from home! (and even in my pjs…haha). Have a lovely week! x

  16. I have to commend you for taking the time to meet up with your coworkers even though you had to be up early the next morning. It’s almost impossible for me to do anything the night before when I have to be up early. I’m like an old lady! πŸ™‚

And I agree, Zacharys does have pretty tasty pizza. Sounds like a great way to end the weekend!

    1. Yes, we got the half-baked pizza at Zachary’s and finished the cooking off at home, which I’d never done before. SO good! And I’m not exactly a night owl, so it was tough to be out! πŸ™‚ Hope you had a great weekend!

  17. Your weekly workouts are so hard-core and inspiring! That’s so sweet Dave came to TRX with you Saturday. He’s lucky to have such a fitspirational wifey!

  18. Love these weekly workout recap posts – it’s insightful to see how a fitness professional incorporates exercise into their own life and I’m super inspired by all the variety in yours! Must be so neat when your husband is in the crowd πŸ™‚ Never tried a deep-dish pie but I am dreaming of one!!

  19. How fun Dave came to your class. But 55 people!?! Wow! That’s a crazy big class! Sometimes relaxing weekends are the best! Actually, I could use one of those but unfortunately our October is so busy! All fun stuff though πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Giselle, Yes, I have a lot of classes that around more than 40 people or so, especially at the bigger gyms. I love the big classes!! πŸ™‚ Hope you enjoy your busy October, lady!

  20. What a fun sounding weekend! Ours was pretty low key, as is our new thing with a baby but I did make it out to a friends baby shower! Lately because of life with a baby doesn’t always mean time at the gym, I’ve been doing 30 minute workouts from the FitnessBlender website…it actually is a real eye opener to show me that 30 minutes can be just as effective as an hour class to feel great and get a good sweat on too!
