A sunny weekend recap and my weekly workouts
Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend! Let’s talk about the past few days of happenings in my world, and then we’ll get into the workouts …
Just look at that pretty sky behind us? As well as the BART station parking lot. Love it.
A casual Friday night in the East Bay
On Friday night, Dave and I did something a bit new. We took a little walk down the Iron Horse Trail to meet some friends at an outdoor food-truck gathering called Taste of the World Market. We had been told this event takes place every Friday, but had never gone before and were pleasantly surprised with the whole thing. It was a very casual and low-key way to spend a Friday evening after work, as people who are getting off the BART (the subway in the Bay Area) just pop on over for some food and beverages before heading home. There was music, some areas to sit and a few food trucks. It was a totally family friendly gathering on a beautiful evening, and it was a place I’m sure we will return.
The food truck scene here in the East Bay is a far cry from the long lines and craziness we were used to in the heart of San Francisco. Laid back, quiet and open to all is now the name-of-the-game.
I was craving sushi, so we opted to skip the food at the trucks and just got drinks (beer for Dave and wine for me, of course) and hung out for about 45 minutes with our friends before saying goodbye to head to a new-to-us sushi restaurant in downtown Walnut Creek called Kaiwa Sushi.
Kaiwa was a bright, yet small sushi spot, which was quite busy on a Friday night. We actually had to wait a bit for a table, then got a good one right near the front window.
As usual, I had some hot sake, a seaweed salad, some mackerel nigiri and a double-decker roll with salmon, tuna, avocado and more as my meal.
We both really enjoyed our meal, and at that moment were super excited that we may have found a place to be our regular sushi spot. However, not so much. I actually ended up feeling a little sick the next morning (which rarely happens, for as often as I have sushi), so I’m thinking we won’t be eating there again.
A very routine and boring Saturday
On Saturday morning, Dave and I each did our own workouts, and then we went out to lunch and drove to the Livermore Outlets to look for fitness gear for me. Seeing as though I wear athletic attire for my job six days-a-week, I’m in constant need of more stuff. As expected, the outlets were super busy, so we only went into the two big Under Armour and Nike outlet stores. I came away with a full spread from Under Armour, so it was mostly successful. After that, we came home, and I took a nap while Dave got ready for work. He went off to the Warriors game, and I went on a little evening walk on the trail, in which I talked to my Mom on the phone the whole time, and then I spent the rest of the evening on the couch. Super fabulous stuff.
A sunny Sunday outside with friends
On Sunday, Dave and I had a really wonderful day. In the morning, Dave washed our cars, while I played on the computer. Then, we went to a one-year-old’s birthday party in a beautiful park. It was an absolutely perfect day to be outside, with clear skies, sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70s. Not only was the crowd great, but the party was also incredibly well done, with little Mexican touches to go along with the “fiesta” theme. We had tacos, hung out with friends and enjoyed the warmth and scene.
I mean how cute was this stuff? Perfect for a sunny afternoon in the park.
After the kids were tired and the party concluded, we went over to a friend’s house to watch the end of the Masters golf tournament for a couple of hours. From there, Dave and I headed home, and once we got back, we walked over to the pool at our complex and laid back in the lounge chairs for a while to enjoy just a little bit more vitamin D before the sun went down.
These pictures? That’s what you get when Dave is not in the mood for a photo-shoot and nearly refuses to cooperate.
And I must say, of all the things that are slightly different in our life now that we’ve moved out of the City, a sunny and warm afternoon sitting near a pool is one major change for the better. (For those of you who live outside of the Bay Area, you may be surprised to find out that there can be about a 20-degree temperature change upwards when you leave San Francisco and head just outside — much more my speed as a Florida girl at heart.)
For dinner last night, Dave made us some delicious and fresh grass-fed beef burgers on the grill for dinner, then we went on a walk, watched some TV and called it a night. I’d say it was a full and great day.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, was our weekend! Totally a good one, full of friends, food, fun and just enough down-time to make it seem relaxing.
My weekly workout recap
Now, as we do every Monday, it’s time to take a look at all of my fitness endeavors over the past week …
Weekly Workouts
- Monday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
- Tuesday –Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, foam rolling
- Wednesday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
- Thursday – Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, foam rolling
- Friday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, did a 30-minute online yoga class
- Saturday – Did a 30-minute CXWORX core workout at home with weights and a resistance tube, did a 10-minute online yoga class at home, foam rolling
- Sunday – Rest day
What was good about my week of workouts?
Group fitness … oh how I love you. I get an incredible workout when teaching BODYATTACK (cardio) and BODYPUMP (resistance), so my weeks certainly fill up with those efforts right there. This past week, I had a good variety of movement, including three sessions of cardio, two-and-a-half sessions of strength and two short sessions of yoga. Lately, I’ve opted for doing short online yoga sessions at home rather than attending a full-hour class, and I’ve enjoyed that change, because it spaces out the benefits. Overall, this past week was a good one and even included a rest day.
What could have been better about my week of workouts?
My weeks are so full with teaching classes, which require me to do the workout, that I don’t have a ton of time to do additional workouts just for me. However, I did spend a little bit of time on Saturday working out by myself at home, doing yoga and a core workout with weights, so that was good. However, I probably should have hit the gym for a heavier weight-training session at some point. That seems to always be the extra piece of the puzzle that I have to fight to fit in, so maybe this upcoming week it will happen. But overall, good stuff.
Have a great start to the week, my friends! I’ll see you back here tomorrow for more.

Oh yum that sushi looks so good but what a shame that you felt sick the next morning- perhaps the level of hygiene of the restaurant wasn’t up to mark! Last night’s dinner involved cleaning out the fridge so there was some steamed rice, black bean veggie stir fry and grilled salmon…definitely need to remake it at some point this week!
Hi K! Grilled salmon is probably my favorite meal, and Dave just started making it for me on our grill, so I hope to have it a lot more often in my future! And nothing is worse than feeling bad after eating at a restaurant, and for as much as I eat out on the weekends, it’s hardly ever happened to me. Oh well! Hope you’re having a great start to the week! 🙂
Last night I had an omelet for dinner, haha. But Alex wasn’t feeling great (his own doing, let me tell you) so I was on my own! But I had great (though simple) eats all the rest of the weekend, so I was still pretty darn happy. I soooooaked up the Vitamin D on Saturday, let me tell you. Ah, it was simply glorious! Have a great day!
Hi Susie! I do love getting some Vitamin D! And omelet for dinner? Yay for that!! Happy Monday to you!
That birthday party is adorable! I love the theme and all the touches. How fun is that Food Truck place! I’d love to have the low key area to just hang around at. I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to just hang out on lounge chairs and watch the sun go down! Yesterday was close, though, and I loved it!
Hi Heather! I know! Hopefully the warmth is headed your way. I love being outside these days. Happy Monday!
Oh that food truck village looks divine! My city is slowing getting around to the greatness that is food trucks. I actually had some kind of curried vegetable wrap from a food truck on Thursday night and it was glorious.
Food truck food is usually really good, and some restaurants in the Bay Area get their start that way. Love it!! Happy Monday, Stacie:)
Love all the sunshine and quality time! What a lovely weekend. 🙂
Thanks, Ruthie! It sure was, I hope yours was too! 🙂
Your weekends always sound so fun 🙂 I was happy it was a bit warmer in PA so I enjoyed a lot of time outside. I also had a 5k and 10k race! They both went really well and were lots of fun. I’m ready for marathon season!
Hi Gretchen! You ran two races? Nice work, lady!! And yay for warmer weather for you!
Looks like an excellent weekend and I’m glad you weren’t too sick from sushi! Our weekend was wonderful and had a lot of similarities to yours. The best workout I’ve done lately was an outdoor TRX workout at the park yesterday. Last night for dinner we had ribs! First time we had made them and they were perfect. Yum! I also totally understand how you feel, my teaching schedule dominates my weekly workouts and leaves little time for extra fun. Have a great day!
Hi Jenna! Oh yum! We’ve never made ribs, but that could be next on the list with the grill! And yes, teaching classes is awesome, but it does take a lot out of us. Here’s to a great week! 🙂
Looks like a fun weekend! Yall are so cute. The Taste of Worldmarket sounds fun. Love anything that has food trucks and people watching. Ughh. I’ve been wanting sushi for weeks and your post just put my cravings over the top! Happy Monday!
Hi Carissa! It was a good weekend, and I hope yours was as well! Happy Monday to you:)
Hello perfect weekend! I don’t know why I noticed this, but man does Dave have some baby blue eyes! They basically match the blue sky in the background of the first photo.
hehehe Jessie, yes he sure does have some good baby blues! Thanks for noticing. Hope you had a great weekend! 🙂
Looks like you had great weekend! I love all the decorations at that birthday party. And that ombre pink cake is adorable. Glad you were able to get some Vitamin D – I can’t wait till I can start to get some color back in my skin 🙂
That little ombre cake was the smash cake! How cute is that? hehhe Happy Monday, Sara!
I love that first picture of you two! How cute! And what a fun weekend! Nice weather makes all the difference.
Sure does, Erin! Happy Monday! 🙂
Is your gold necklace from Target? I just bought one from there! And weird…you were craving sushi?! haha, I think if we lived near each other all of our money would go towards finding the best sushi places around 🙂 Sounds like a perfect weekend to me– lol, love the photos of Dave too!
Hi Katie — Actually no, my gold necklace was part of my Rocksbox delivery from last week — it’s called the Jules Goddess necklace, and I love it! And yes, I will never tire of trying new sushi restaurants — wish we could do it together heheh! 🙂 Happy Monday!
Oh yes! Just checked it out! Love!
YAY!:)
I love those super low-key weekends where you spend Saturday night at home… 🙂
We all need those types of weekends sometimes, don’t we Lora? 🙂 Happy Monday!
Haha, Scott never feels like taking photos. It’s a good day to get one of him on the blog! 😉 Looks like you guys had a fantastic weekend. I love the little areas you guys visit. They look so pretty!
Hi Heather! Thank you! And Dave is usually a good sport, but he had enough by the end of Sunday afternoon I guess hehehe. Hope you guys had a great weekend as well! 🙂
I had fresh shrimp rolls and pho last night. It hit the spot! Just curious as to what your favorite (and most flattering) workout pants/crops are. It would be great if I found an option outside of LLL wunder unders.
Hi Sam! Believe it or not — I’m a Nike gal mostly. I like the Nike sculpt leggings, and I usually get them from Macy’s.
That first picture of you guys is so cute!!! You look gorgeous.
And I SO know how it is to want to take selfies with the man & he’s soooooo uncooperative. Must be a husband thing? hah
I think sometimes Dave is better about “being in the moment” — thus he doesn’t want me to social-mediatize it all hahahha! Maybe they are smarter than we are when it comes to that?
I had no idea about the food trucks! Ahhh! You find ALL the cool things. 🙂
Hhahah that’s right, Carla! You just stick with me, and I’ll show you a whole set of fun things! 🙂
