Hi, friends! How’s life? How was the Fourth? If you are in the U.S., I hope you were able to have a day off of work to relax and hang out with your friends and family and/or pets. I sure did enjoy the day with this little group …
So as you can see, Dave, Rudy, Brady and I are back home and settled in after our awesome trip to San Diego. We were there for about a week, and it was enough time for me to attend IDEA World Fitness Convention and BlogFest, for us to spend time with Dave’s parents and have a little fun too.
I’m just about done with my recap of what I learned at IDEA World, so all you’re getting is another batch of faves today, and then we’ll get back to a regular posting schedule next week with regular stuff. Okay? 🙂
Family hangouts in San Diego
This is totally the first favorite!
After I finished up my last session at IDEA World on Saturday evening, I switched into vacay mode for the next three days, and it was just what I needed after three days of go-go-go activities. Dave, Rudy and Brady and I soaked up the gorgeous weather of San Diego and enjoyed relaxing together and even some playing too.
Church with the fam
We went to a church service on Sunday in the Kensington neighborhood of San Diego to see Dave’s dad preach a sermon. (Yes, Dave’s dad is a preacher! I think I’ve told you that before, but if not, now you know — he also was the officiant of our wedding more than six years ago, and he is amazing at delivering a message to a crowd.)
Brady went into the nursery that day and crawled around the room so much that he ended up getting rug burn on his tiny elbow. Poor guy. He had fun though. Also, do you recognize his fancy outfit from both my brother’s wedding and Mother’s Day? We make sure all outfits get plenty of use around here.
Brady’s first dip in the pool
We also took Brady to the pool at the Loews Coronado and put him in the water in a little floating contraption for his very first swim — entirely covered in a rash guard top, hat and bathing suit, confirming the fact that we are first-time parents.
As expected, he was a huge fan of splashing around and loved every second of it. Brady basically likes everything that we try with him, outside of food (although we’re making some small improvements in that department). It was absolutely adorable.
Dave and I hung out at the pool two days in a row and even stayed the night at the Loews, while Brady went back with Dave’s parents to stay with them at their house.
We enjoyed the alone time, and we even went out to a fancy dinner one night and a casual dinner the next in downtown Coronado. We tried A5 beef and even beet-flavored cocktails. So much yum and so nice to be out and about, just like the old days.
And for those of you who have been to Coronado Island, we hit up Moo Time both nights for big sundaes after dinner. Moo Time has the BEST ice cream, and the line out the door is completely warranted.
It was great for us to have some time to hang out without Brady, but we totally missed our little tot. In fact, we went over to visit him a couple of times, just because we could. It sure was nice to change out of workout clothes for our dinners though …
Poolside salmon salad
I always love a salmon salad, but eating one by the pool on a nice day is perhaps the best way to eat. I had this one at the Loews one of the days, and it hit the spot … jicama on a salad just works.
Post-SoulCycle poke bowls
On Fourth of July, Dave and I each went separately to SoulCycle (we can’t go together due to little Brady and all), and after that I picked up some poke bowls for our lunch. I happen to love Pokeatery, a newer spot near us, because they have so many options for toppings and inclusion in the bowls. Mmmm! Dave thinks there are too many toppings and prefers a more simple poke bowl, but not me. I love the toppings.
Flavored Topo Chico
Have you heard of Topo Chico sparkling water? I tried the original a while back and wasn’t impressed, but had a chance to try the flavored version at IDEA World, and I’m officially obsessed with the grapefruit flavor. This stuff is available at the grocery store and is oh-so-refreshing. The perfect summer beverage.
Weekly workout recap
Now on to the fitness.
Here’s a look at my workouts from last week …
- Monday: 1-hour BODYPUMP class, 10 a.m.
- Tuesday: 30-minute BODYATTACK, 30-minute CXWORX classes, 9:30 a.m.
- Wednesday: Rest day
- Thursday: 45-minute coconut class, 35-minute weights circuit at IDEA World
- Friday: 30-minute band class, 15-minute bodyweight class, 30-minute bodyweight class at IDEA World
- Saturday: 45-minute barre class, 30-minute barre-less class at IDEA World
- Sunday: Rest day
This past week was a different one for fitness, for sure. I was only in the gym two days and then did a bunch of random workouts on Thursday through Saturday at IDEA World in conference room using various pieces of equipment, including a coconut (it was cheesy and not a good workout hehehe). However, I love trying new things, so it’s all good.
I didn’t pick up weights as much as I’d normally like to each week, and that’s okay. I’m hoping to get back to three-times-a-week resistance routine here very soon.

- Beat the heat. Here are a few ways to cool down naturally this summer. I can’t roll my tongue for the first one though. Can you? The inversion sounds like fun though, and I did an inversion off the couch almost every single day during my second and third trimesters of pregnancy last summer.
- Oils and beauty. I had a run-in with some peppermint oil this week, and it nearly got in my eyes and had me crying and flushing my eyes for five minutes straight — not fun. So I’m hesitant to share this, but this is a cool idea for where to use oil before your blow-dry. But like, be careful.
- New podcast. My friend Gina, of the Fitnessista, has started a new podcast called “Healthy in Real Life.” Check it out!
