Tales from the weekend + my weekly workouts
Hi friends! How was your weekend? I hope you had some good times and are ready to start the week off strong. Today, I’ve got a weekend recap for you, as well as a look at my latest week of workouts.
Friday evening dinner in San Francisco
After finishing up some work on a busy Friday afternoon, I had my first chance to change into clothing other than workout-gear in a couple of weeks (so sad, right?). I drove to Dave’s office in Oakland, and we hopped on the BART to head under the Bay into the City for dinner with his sister, Jess. She lives in Los Angeles, but was visiting for a teacher’s conference and staying near Union Square.
It’s always about 15-20 degrees colder in San Francisco than it is in Walnut Creek, believe it or not. I was loving the cool breeze as we walked the streets of our old ‘hood.
Because Jess is a fellow foodie, we made plans to meet at a nice restaurant and selected Town Hall in the SoMa/Financial District for our dining pleasure, (a place Dave and I had enjoyed once before). And wouldn’t you know that we ran into people we knew while there? Big city, small world.
Town Hall is known for its upscale Southern comfort food. That being said, we started with the best bread and butter, some veal meatballs (the highlight of the meal!), and then shared a salmon and quinoa dish, salty ham and biscuits as well as barbecue shrimp on soaked bread. So much good food!
We had a totally delicious dinner, great conversation and enjoyed our night in the City, which was complete by watching President Obama’s motorcade drive down the closed-off streets on his way to an appearance.
A Saturday full of a workout, work and errands
On Saturday morning, I taught a super-full morning BODYPUMP class, which was such a good way to kick-off the day. After that, I went home to take care of some freelance writing work for much of the day, which kept me indoors and sitting still for far too long. I broke up the day with some shopping-related errands and finally laid on the couch for a nap that didn’t happen in the late afternoon. All the while, Dave was gone golfing in day one of a two-day tournament, so it was just Rudy and me holding down the fort.
An al fresco movie night on Saturday evening
On Saturday evening, Dave and I put on pajamas to join a bunch of friends for an outdoor “movie night” birthday party in one of our friends’ backyards. I had never done something like that before, and it was such a different twist to a party. They had rented a projector screen, set up chairs, rented a popcorn maker and truly set the scene for a picture show. While “Back to the Future” was showing on the screen, I actually only watched a bit of the movie before hanging out by the snack table and chatting (as I tend to do at parties). I loved the theming of the night, and we had so much fun celebrating the birthday of our good friend, Jen. And no, I hardly took any pictures, and the ones I did were in the dark. Bad, bad blogger.
Walking and working at home on Sunday
On Sunday, Dave was off early for the final day of his golf tournament, and I was on the couch on the computer again. I had a writing project that I had to finish up, which took much of the day. I did take a break to go on a 30-minute walk on the trail with little Rudy though, which was super hot, but a nice way to get some fresh air. In the evening, Dave and I did the exact same thing we did last Sunday — rode our bikes to Whole Foods and picked up steaks and asparagus for dinner. I can’t get enough! Now let’s get into the fitness …
My recent weekly fitness and workouts recap

What was good about my week of workouts?
This past week was another pretty intense one, but also included one full rest day as well as one active recovery day with only a short TRX yoga session. I got in two cardio sessions and four strength sessions as well, which is a great ratio for me. The highlight of workouts this week was definitely launching the latest BODYATTACK release on Monday night to a big group. It was challenging and a lot of preparation went into it, but I love my Monday-night crew.
What could have been better about my week of workouts?
This past week of workouts was pretty full, because I subbed a couple of additional BODYPUMP classes. I don’t exactly like to make it a habit to teach BODYPUMP more than once-a-day, but did end up doing that two weeks-in-a-row. No big deal, because I’ll be back to a normal teaching schedule this week.
That will do it for today, my friends. Have a good one!

How was your weekend?
How often do you go out to dinner?
What’s your favorite workout lately?
Love the idea of a movie night birthday party- definitely something to keep in mind for the future :)! Nice going with your workouts, Ashely! Lately I’ve been loving lower body workouts which is funny as I used to hate them! There’s nothing like the feeling after smashing a set of barbell lunges!
AGREED, Khushboo! Good work on the workouts, lady! 🙂
It sounds like you had an awesome weekend – a little fun, a little fitness, and a little bit of work! We typically eat out 1-2x/week, depending on the week. It was definitely more frequently when we lived in the city, but we both enjoy cooking at home so we try to make an effort to try new recipes which make for fun date nights in 🙂
I like to do both as well, Becky. And yes, cities have way more options for dining, which makes it more enticing. Hope you had a nice weekend! 🙂
Sounds like a perfect weekend to me! And what a great idea to do an outdoor movie night?! How fun!
I made acorn squash for the first time last night and it was delicious. I’m normally a butternut devotee, but I decided to try out a different gourd variety and was super pleased!
Have a great Monday.
YAY for that! I need to get some squash now that they are in season. Thanks for the reminder. 🙂 Happy Monday, my friend!
The outdoor movie night sounds like a blast! I’m all for any excuse to get to wear pjs!
Ha, I know, Stacie. Sooo comfortable to be in PJs at the party. 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend, lady!
A trip to the city and an outdoor movie night– that sounds fantastic. My husband loves BTTF. I like it, but I’ve seen it a few too many times!
I’m sure you have! My husband loves to watch older movies over and over again hahah! I usually zone out. 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend!
The projector screen movie for a birthday sounds so fun! You always have such exciting weekends!
Well thanks, Megan! This was a good one. I hope yours was as well! 🙂
We had a great weekend! Friday we went out for some pizza as a family of three, then hung out with my sister and her family who were in town for our Canadian Thanksgiving. Saturday I got a solo trip to the gym in for my fav spin class and then spent the day with my husbands family! Sunday I was in charge of cooking the turkey and then had a great dinner with my family! Phewf! Now I”m off to bodypump as my husband is off today and is on baby duty 😉 I love watching movies outside, I used to do that when I was a kid! What a great birthday idea!
Have fun at BODYPUMP, and I hope your turkey turned out great! I bet it did. 🙂 Have a lovely day, Fiona.
I love movies on the lawn! There used to be an outdoor showing of movies with all the free popcorn you could eat on campus when I attended USF. It was my favorite part of every weekend! Also, steaks and asparagus sounds wonderful for dinner. We need a grill… ASAP. I hope you have a great week!
Having a grill is SUCH a game-changer for meals. Plus it means Dave is in charge of most of the food hehehe! Happy Monday, Heather! 🙂
What a fun birthday idea! In the summer, we do a lot of outdoor movies in my area, and they’re always so much fun. Back to the Future is a great movie but I probably also would have hung out at the snack table too 😉 Good job this week with your workouts!
Thanks, Gretchen! I will always be at the snack table. That’s just me hehehe. Hope you had a nice weekend, lady! 🙂
How cool is movie night in the backyard? And Back to the Future? I’m due for a re-watch!! Town Hall is pretty great hey? I had my welcome work lunch there when I moved to SF and it was delish! Happy Monday lady!
Ohhh nice! So you have good memories of ol’ Town Hall then? Hope you had a nice weekend, Jill!! 🙂
Hehe… I’ve been wearing lots of workout clothes too. This morning, though, I realized that most of them are in the wash. Time for laundry! 🙂 Over the weekend, I took my sister to fro-yo, had an amazing day at worship yesterday, ran a couple miles, ate some food, watched the movie ‘Cinderella’ (I really liked it :-), and now I’m getting back into the groove after the conference last week.
Hi Emily! I have to do SO many loads of laundry, as you can imagine. And what a nice line-up of activities you had this weekend. LOVELY! 🙂
Sounds like such a fun, jam-packed weekend! Love you al-fresco movie night. That’s genius! We’ll have to re-create that in Denver with our crew shortly.
My weekend was awesome – we took a weekend trip back to our old stomping grounds in Chicago for my 10 year high school reunion and to watch the Chicago Marathon. Can’t lie… I’m feeling a wee bit tired at work today due to the activity, ha!
Oh Jessica, that sounds like so much fun to go back to your old spot. Good for you!! And a very Happy Monday! Get through this day! 🙂 hahaha
Sometimes a nice night out with the man is the answer to all of lifes problems 🙂 Even if you aren’t currently having any! My husband and I just made a big time move to another area, so we dont know anyone except for my parents right now. We want to go out on the town and explore a bit to see what our new town has to offer! Im hoping to find some great hole in the wall restaurant to become our new date night place!
Hi Kat! Well I’m no stranger to moving to new places. Exploring your new area is going to be super fun — and at least you have your parents there!! Enjoy!! Happy Monday! 🙂
I love it that you guys go out to eat and explore on the weekends! It makes me think I need to start doing that!
Yes, we sure do, Hilary! We love to get out and about! 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend!
The outdoor movie night sounds like it was so much fun! I love that idea. Although I might’ve picked a different movie. Not that Back to the Future isn’t a classic, but I would probably lose interest and end up chatting too. 😉
Good thing we have such lovely weather in the Bay to make movie night possible, right? 🙂 Hope you had a good weekend, Sarah!
