A weekend full of fitness, food and fun
It wouldn’t be a great start to the week if I didn’t open with a very “Happy Monday” to you! I hope your weekend was wonderful. As usual, mine was full of fitness, food and fun — just how I like it.
Attending the Team LUNA Chix Summit
On Friday afternoon, I was invited to attend a couple of sessions at the annual LUNA Chix Summit, which was held in at a hotel on the water in Berkeley. Although there was a full schedule of fitness and lifestyle events throughout the weekend, I was only able to drop in for a bit. In case you aren’t familiar with Team LUNA Chix, it’s a nationwide program, which brings together women in their own towns to sweat and support each other, as well as to raise money for the Breast Cancer Fund. Good stuff, right? If you want to see if there’s a Team LUNA Chix near you, check out the site today.
While at the Summit, I took a SmartFlow Yoga class led by Yogi Sadie, who is the resident yoga teacher at the CLIF Bar Headquarters (CLIF Bar owns LUNA, by the way). During this session, she walked us through each pose and the transitions of how to move along in the first Vinyasa sun salutation. If you know anything about yoga, this is the most popular sequence of moves and yet one that is not easy to master. I really enjoyed the personal attention Sadie gave each of us and walked away with a few new tips and tricks up my sleeve for my practice. (Yes, because I take yoga once a week, I can safely say I have a “practice.”)
How cute are those LUNA yoga mats? And yes, I came away with a ton of LUNA Bars.
After that, I went a nutrition talk given by the lovely Sarah-Jane Bedwell, a registered dietitian who was just adorable and knowledgable. She gave us some tips on how to create balanced meals to support our training goals. Even though I’m not a distance runner with “race-day” events to prepare for, I took a lot out of the talk. Basically, she told us to include carbs, protein, healthy fats as well as fruits and veggies in every meal and snack and to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I wrote down some notes from the event and will be sure to throw in those details in upcoming posts.
Before I left, I walked around the little expo outside for a bit to enjoy the beautiful day, and then hit the road to head home for dinner with Dave’s parents. Thanks to the LUNA team for inviting me and providing me with a fun bag of LUNA swag. You gals are pretty awesome!
Having some good times in Walnut Creek
On Friday evening, I arrived home to find Dave and his Dad hanging out in our living room, which was a great sight. Dave’s parents had been on a vacation in Northern California, and stayed with us at the beginning and end of their road-trip back to their home in San Diego. That night, we had an 8 p.m. reservation at Prima, an Italian restaurant in downtown Walnut Creek, which came to us highly recommended. Yes, while our food was good, the service was … strange. Not to mention, the restaurant was really bright, which really didn’t add to the ambiance. However, we had a nice time chatting and eating, in spite of the less-than-perfect dining conditions. And the best part? Our walk back to the car just so happened to take us by Kara’s Cupcakes, which we went to last week as well, so we popped in for some full-sized cupcake delights after getting minis on the last visit. I went with the carrot cake cupcake with a bunny on top, and I loved it.
Here’s what I had for dinner at Prima: some very dense and tasty bread with dipping oil, a few bites of the beet salad and the fontina-stuffed chicken with steamed spinach and almond sauce. I nearly licked my plate clean. And of course, a look at the cupcakes we each selected and brought home to enjoy in a cute pink box.
On Saturday, after a little stroll around the neighborhood, Dave’s parents headed out mid-morning. After they left, I went to the gym to pump a little iron. Sadly, it was much later in the morning than I normally go, and the gym was incredibly crowded. I had to wait for equipment on nearly every set, so probably didn’t do as much as I would have liked. Nonetheless, I did it. After that, I went home to shower up and chill for a bit, then Dave and I went to a friend’s housewarming party just about a mile away from our place.
Let’s just say the party was a good time, and we needed it. As many of you know, Dave works for the Golden State Warriors and because we’re in the heat of basketball season, he’s been working a lot. This was the first weekend in more than a month that he didn’t have to work at a game over the weekend. Because the party was hosted by a fellow Warriors employee, there were a lot of his coworkers in attendance, and they were all excited to have a night off.
How many tries does it take to get a decent photo? Too many. I settled for this one, with the strange side-looking-smile and all.
During the party, we watched the Warriors play (of course), enjoyed some Chipotle provided by the lovely hostess, played some card games and laughed a lot. Oh and we took a group photo using a selfie stick, which turned out a little blurry, but was rather entertaining to make happen. I really enjoyed the casual evening and especially liked seeing how her place was decorated. (Honestly, I wanted to take pictures of nearly every room to share with you, because it was so cute!)
On Sunday, Dave and I did a whole lot of relaxing and a little bit of movement. We watched a bunch of episodes of Shark Tank, went grocery shopping, bought a basketball and walked to a park to shoot hoops (ummm, I was terrible, but still had fun), then we had a Skype date with some friends back in Orlando and made a delicious pizza for dinner. Suffice to say, this weekend was pretty darn good.
My weekly workout recap
Switching gears, now it’s time for my weekly workout recap, which I do every single Monday to show you how I’ve been moving. Here it goes …
Weekly Workouts
- Monday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
- Tuesday –Taught a one-hour BODYPUMP class, foam rolling
- Wednesday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, foam rolling
- Thursday – Attended a one-hour reformer Pilates class at OnPointe Training, completed a 30-minute CXWORX core workout at home
- Friday – Taught a one-hour BODYATTACK class, attended a one-hour Smartflow Yoga class at the LUNA Chix Summit
- Saturday – Completed a one-hour weights workout, foam rolling
- Sunday – Rest day
What was good about my week of workouts?
Once again, I had a lot of great variety this past week. I had an equal balance of cardio and strength training, which is ideal. My week consisted of three cardio sessions (all of which were teaching BODYATTACK) and three resistance sessions (teaching BODYPUMP, reformer Pilates and a solo session on the weight-room floor). I even fit in a great yoga class at the LUNA Chix Summit, which was particularly good because I learned a few new tips and tricks for perfecting my sun salutations in other classes. A core session, as well as a rest day, rounded out this past week. Good stuff.
What could have been better about my week of workouts?
I picked up actual weights twice this past week, but both my CXWORX-core workout and Pilates-reformer workout had resistance elements with tubing and cables. Yet, I’m such a fan of weights, that I prefer to use them during three sessions each week. Let’s see if this week will be better.
Have a great Monday, my friends, and I’ll see you back here tomorrow!

I love a good house party. Bars and restaurants are fun and all that, but house parties are where it is at! The best workout that I’ve had recently was the St. Paddy’s day leg tabata that Erin put me through and left me sore for dayyys, but the C2 yoga class that I took this weekend was totally unconventional and incredible. Have a great week following that fabulous weekend!
Hi Susie! I like house parties too! And I need to get back to CorePower — I love C2 classes. Hope you had a great weekend as well! 🙂
Looks like you had an awesome weekend! I’m trying to get back into doing bikram every day. I love it, but its sometimes difficult to fit 90 minutes into my schedule.
Hi Carissa! Bikram is serious stuff. I’ve done two actual Bikram classes in my life and they were killer. So congrats if you can do it regularly! 🙂
Looks like an awesome time had by all! And I say I have a yoga “practice” whenever I go.. (1-2x per month? Running is more my thing, and I stretch on my own incorporating stuff from my ballet days…)
Hi Alyssa, So yes, you do have a yoga practice hehe. I bet you know some great stretches from your days in dance! Hope your weekend was great:)
Happy Monday to you too! Those cupcakes looked delish. I’m so glad you had fun at the summit. It looks like an awesome learning experience and I wish I could have been there! I’ve learned recently how hard it is to come back from being sick!
Oh man Jenna! Not fun, hope you are feeling better. And I hope you had a nice weekend! 🙂
LUNA events are the best- that looks like an amazing time!
I was in a work funk the past week and have not worked out in SEVEN days! I’m looking forward to working out today!
Hi Katie! Oh no!! Hope you get a little sweat session in today then. Happy Monday! 🙂
How cute are the two of you? I love that y’all just randomly bought a basketball and went somewhere to shoot hoops!
Hi Stacie! It was totally fun. And clearly Dave was more into it than me, but I tried!! Helped me to get some steps in on an otherwise lazy day. Hope you had a great weekend! 🙂
Sounds like you had a jam packed fun weekend!! I’m glad you shared the less than awesome part of the restaurant experience – nothing makes me more mad than paying so much for a meal when I get less than stellar service! I think one a week yoga can be considered a very solid practice!! Well done 🙂
Hi Jill! I know! I hate bad or weird service, but it happens. And me and yoga — we’re not together as much as I’d like, but we try hehehe. Hope your weekend was great! #burbenvy and all!
Those cupcakes look so good! I’ve been doing the whole ‘eat everything in SF again’ which I seriously need to curb again… before I can’t fit in my jeans lol. Food in Walnut Creek seems so good!
Hi Cassie! It’s hard to say no to all the food we’ve got around us here. I feel ya! And yes, Walnut Creek has some great eats for sure. Hope your weekend was lovely!
Fun fun weekend! I had no idea Dave worked for the Golden State Warriors. Their actually my favorite basketball team. Very cool… and I’m very jealous!
Oh yay, Jessie! Go Warriors!! 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend!
That’s a great picture of you too! And another great week of workouts- I am always so impressed by the variety and balance of your workouts each week:) Have a great Monday!
Thank you, Lisa! It helps me to write them all down and make sure each week has enough of everything. Hope you had a great weekend! 🙂
I’ve been to Prima with my boyfriend! Such great food! We went for a mini pizza and a cheese/meat plate– yum!
Hi Carrie! Awesome! I liked the food, but wasn’t crazy about the service or environment there actually. Glad you enjoyed your time at Prima! Hope you had a nice weekend! 🙂
SAME. We felt the same way about the environment- I wish they would dim the lights and make it a little more italian-romantic 🙂
Looks like an amazing weekend mama, have a great Monday to kick off the week!
Thanks, Katrina! Right back at you! 🙂
I love the peppermint Luna bars, they are my favorite! Did you get to try any new flavors? Yes, my family used to love Primas but it got a little too noisy for them, and I agree with you on the brightness.
Hi Alexa! Glad it wasn’t just us being snobby — but not a fan of the scene at Prima. And I brought home a ton of LUNAs, so I’ll be digging through the new flavors soon. The Chocolate Cupcake is AWESOME! 🙂 Hope you had a nice weekend!
I’ve never heard of the Luna Chix Summit but it sounds like a lot of fun and I love that it’s to support a good cause. Plus, leaving with hand fulls of Luna bars never hurts. 😉
I’m glad to hear Dave finally got a weekend off and that you were able to enjoy it at a fun party. And I’m the same way with hating the way pictures turn out. When I used to do more lifestyle posts I would make Brandon retake pictures of my at least 5 times, lol. But you honestly look adorable in that pic- not strange at all! 🙂
Dave says that it’s always take “just one more picture” and that’s NEVER the case hehehe. Happy Monday, Sarah!
I love that you post about your upcoming weeks workout schedule! I am totally going to steal that idea for my future Monday blog posts. Keep myself more accountable 🙂 And the photo is cute- the side smile adds personality 🙂
Hi Rachel! Yes, these are the workouts I completed over the past week, so I can look at it and make changes for the next week. You should definitely consider trying it out too! Accountability is good. Hope you had a lovely weekend! 🙂
What an awesome weekend you lived, Ashley! I’m jelly! 😉
Hi Lily! Thanks! Hope you had a nice weekend too! 🙂
Sounds like a wonderful weekend! My weekend was awesome – I did a lot of yard work, hit up Trader Joe’s and painted my front door yellow #winwinwin
Hi Doc! A yellow front door? That’s awesome! Happy Monday! 🙂
So much yummy food! What a fun conference!
Thanks, Erin! It was a good time!:)
Your weekend sounds fab! What a cool event put on by Luna- I love the mix of classes and speakers. Now that I work from home I’ve found the best times to go to the gym when its nearly dead– I love it!! Also- I thought you would be happy to know that I went shopping all weekend for new sandals but ended up coming home and ordering both pairs you got from DSW a few weeks back 🙂
Hi Katie! Oh my gosh, twinsies! You make my day. So glad to know you’ve ordered some cute shoes from DSW! And YES oh the off times from the gym, I won’t let that happen again! Happy Monday 🙂
I heard the Luna Chix summit was awesome! My friend Cynthia went!
Hi Sue! Oh cool! I wish I had been able to attend more of the sessions. Happy Monday to you! 🙂
I’ve never heard about the Team LUNA Chix Summit, it sounds pretty awesome. I love a few specific products and their marketing efforts. Thanks for the link I’m going to look into it – but I’m assuming since I live near Berkley I missed the local one for this year 🙁 xoxo, ganeeban
Hi there! You can still look into the Bay Area activities, because those take place throughout the year. Happy Monday! 🙂
Hello, A Lady Goes West! It’s been too long.
Sounds like a great weekend, and I do love that Luna mat (did you get to keep it?). I went to Kara’s Cupcakes myself at Oxbow Public Market in Napa (Kara’s S’mores is my FAVORITE of all cupcakes… and I feel like I’ve mentioned that to you before) after a friend’s birthday picnic at one of the wineries. I also just went to OnPointe Training yesterday… which happens to be across the street from Kara’s Cupcakes. Some fun parallels in our weeks!
Hi Catherine! How funny! Did you enjoy OnPointe? And I love that we’ve been having these experiences at the same time hehehe. Small world. Glad you stopped by! Hope all is well in your world! 🙂
Noted on Prima… 😉 Never been and now I’ll move it down the list.
Also! Shark Tank! It’s our favorite, we watch it constantly! One of these days I’ll be up there asking for $500k for 2% of my business. Ha.
Hi Carla! I know! I want to see some shows about what those people are up to after they appear. You can totally be on it one day!
Oh my gosh, did you see they’re doing that? I think it’s called Beyond the Tank and it starts somewhere around May 1!! http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/beyond-the-tank-shark-tank-follow-up-series-debuts-may-1st-36204/
Neato! Thanks! 🙂
