My weekly workouts and a yoga date

Happy Monday to you all! I hope you had a nice weekend. As usual, mine included teaching group fitness and eating good food. On Friday night, after I taught BODYPUMP, Dave and I walked to Sushi Rock for a tasty casual dinner. And on Saturday, after I showered up from teaching BODYATTACK, we attended an outdoor music festival in Golden Gate Park, which was super fun and unseasonably hot. More about that later, but for now, we talk fitness.

A first time for everything

Dave and I do a lot of things together, but one thing we rarely do as a pair is work out. Dave usually gets a quick workout in before he goes to work in the small gym at our apartment, and I get my workouts in at various gyms where I work or while trying classes. He’s not a big fan of organized group fitness, and therefore, never comes to my classes. Yet for the first time ever, yesterday, we attended a class together, and I loved every minute of it.

We went to Moxie Yoga in the Mission neighborhood, which I had visited before while using my complimentary ClassPass. This time, we were there for the all-levels Moxie Fundamentals class, which was one hour of basic yoga postures each held for a little longer than usual. Even though it was a class for beginners, it still moved pretty quickly at times and provided plenty of challenge. I liked the fact that we took a lot of time getting into postures at the start of the class, because I picked up a few new pointers to aid in my yoga practice moving forward. The instructor gave so many helpful set-up cues, and some were ones I miss out on in more advanced classes. I won’t be doing a full review of the class, but I will tell you something funny: Dave got so sweaty he was slipping allover his mat. Good times.

I don’t think we’ll make going to Sunday afternoon yoga a weekly affair, but I know Dave enjoyed the stretching just as much as I enjoyed having him there. A win-win for everybody. After class, we hit up the salad bar at Whole Foods and went home to veg, feeling loose and calm. Namaste!

Recap of my weekly workouts

Now back to business. Every Monday, I like to take a minute to recap all of my workouts from the week. It’s a way to look at what was good and bad, and my weeks are always changing as I try new classes around the City. Let’s get to it …

What was good about my week of workouts?

The best thing I did this week was attend the aerials conditioning class at Circus Center. That class had me completely out of my comfort zone and had me moving my body in new ways, when trying out the apparatus. It included a little bit of strength, cardio and some incredibly good stretching. It’s always beneficial to try new things, and I did that this week not only with aerials, but also with an outdoor boot-camp class in the gorgeous San Francisco sunshine. I did a lot more cardio this week than normal and lifted weights three times. Those sessions, combined with the stretching and foam rolling makes for a good line-up.

What could have been better in my week?

I did not have an official rest day this week and should have, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take Dave to yoga with me, and the only time we could go was Sunday. Even though Sunday’s yoga class was pretty basic, provided some regeneration, and that’s all I did that day, it’s still much better to take one day off completely from all exercise, and I will strive to do that this week. I did a lot of bodyweight strength training throughout the various classes I attended, including aerials conditioning, Avant-Barre and the outdoor boot-camp, but only had a couple of very short weight-room sessions actually lifting outside of BODYPUMP, so that’s another area that needs a little improvement and focus this week.

Questions of the day

What’s one good workout that you’ve done recently? Did you do anything fun this weekend? What’s something you’ve done for the first time recently?

  1. Haha, my husband gets super sweaty when he goes to yoga! We used to share a mat, but finally I got all grossed out and bought him his own 🙂

    Hope you enjoyed the festival!

  2. Yoga with my hubby used to be my favorite! There were so many studios in Seattle; it’s been harder to find one we like since moving to Orlando.

    1. Hi Pre! I moved from Orlando two years ago. I didn’t try a lot of the private places, but I did go to Orlando Power Yoga and Bikram a couple of times and that was good stuff. Thanks for stopping by. How do you like Orlando so far?
